White Smoke on Idle- A3 Dagdag

This is my friend's A3 2.0l TDI

Doesn't smoke when you're on boost but when you let off coming up to a junction then accellerate again or let it idle for a bit then rev it up you get a lot of white smoke.

I know nothing about diesels, could it be a breather or EGR? problem? Or is it just knackered? It had a new turbo about a year ago so it shouldn't be that, it had a boost leak recently and the garage put a new "pipe" on it and it now pulls well again except for this smoking which is embarrassingly bad.. Also it apparently loses a bit of water over 300 miles or so but the garage may have fixed that, ( I haven't spoken to them) (can you tell this car belongs to a girl?)

It could be a symptom of bad timing. OR it could be the wrong fuel( petrol instead of diesel)

I thought white smoke was oil, when you see diesels over fueling its always dark smoke.

IF the timing is out of range it will be white smoke, been there done that. Are you 100% sure that on last filling the owner didn't put petrol instead of diesel ?

Pretty sure it's not petrol, it'd been doing this for a while I think, gradually getting worse. Can I check timing with Vagcom? (this is a big learning curve for me..)

Is it a pd engine. If so does the oil level creep up. If so I can almost guarantee its injector seals. The injeactor retaining wedge allows injectors to move slightly over time. If you decide on doing seals it's easy with the right tools.
you can check injection quantity and torsion value with vcds.
done a few seals for this eexact problem.

It should be a bkd engine code. The quick release boost pipes clips wear and they pop Off under boost

That is a bkd. I'm almost certain it's injector seals. They run at such high pressure fuel leeches past seal into ccylinder at idle and you get white smoke from UN burnt fuel.

By the way it usually stink like a bbq and lighter fluid. The eafly bkd heads can go porous and coolant gets into inlet manifold but you would notice coolant loss. What year is it?

I'll check the year, it's done quite a lot of miles (and had been clocked when bought )

Yeah, I was trying to place the smell, it was using a little water before it went into the garage, but they said it should be fixed now (don't see how if all they did was replace a boost pipe.. Can't believe they gave the car back to her like this to be honest.)

I could do a write up buts there's plenty of guides aalready.
sometimes the injectors wear grooves in the head opposite the wedges.
just make sure you replace all 8 of the stretchoice bolts for the injector cams and the 4 for the injectors, it's critical.
the injector seal and adjustment screw can be had for roughly 25 quid per injector.
you then set the injector lash and you are away. You can then ccheck the injection quantity with vcds.
It takes about 3_4 hours Inc a brew.
the only special tool is the injector puEller.
