We have made an enhancement so that old threads should now link from search results to the correct thread. This is not yet in place for single post links
To keep it simple: IMHO everyone does it. Now, VW was caught. Maybe they did it a more silly way then others. They will survive it, people will forget in a time. After nuclear age and then computer or communication age it's now the scandal age. Every day a new one. It's kinda boring.
I am sure it will transpire that all mfrs are at it in one way or another. By default Audi, Skoda and Seat surely must do some fiddling to share many of the same engine platforms and have not raised any suspicion by having wildly different figures.
Like Alex says. I'm willing to wager a bet that all manufacturers are doing this on both petrol and diesel cars. I 'm also waiting to see what happens at the common thread between all of them......Bosch. Surely they had to have a hand in it.
Me too Rikki, my dag dag Golf TDI (ALH) just rolled over a smokey 363,000 miles. I'm going to drive it 'til the wheels fall off.
I like that they did it. I live in California, and this state sucks.
Like take for instance, water based house paint. Because they want to cut down on VOCs(how much does water based paint have to begin with), it now take 2 to 3 times has much paint to cover even white based primer. What they don't do is compare the VOCs to the increase amount of emissions from having to produce 2 to 3 times as much paint. The paint companies sure earn more money.
For the last few years, they have been doing diesel smog checks. Bogus. They check the OBDII, look at the engine(as if the smog guys could tell what they are looking at), rev the motor and look for black smoke. But the smog guys sure make more money.

They can have my car when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel.

Yes, they did, they admitted it- they developed the software with the algorithm for the test recognition- but they developed it for internal procedures and engineering, officially. And they warned VW that using this in the cars is illegal. It is not Smith and Wesson as a manufacturer that kills people, it is the guy who shoots.

I've heard they tested the BMW diesel cars and they were OK.
I'll go against the grain and say that not everyone does it, IMO. Many manufacturers have come out and said in no uncertain terms that they don't, and bearing in mind the scrutiny this situation is going to get, no company would say that unless it was true.
Make no mistake, what the VAG has done is seriously, seriously wrong.
I think some credit is due here. As I understand it there was software in the ECU that could work out when the vehicle was under test and reduce its emissions accordingly, presumably at the expense of power. I respect that sort of lateral thinking.
