S2 prices are all over the place now, which could make getting a good one for your budget tricky, and you may have to wait a while.
So what now.....?

Another S2 may be the way forward, having had one you would buy another much more carefully.
If I was to buy an S2 again I would buy a "good" ABY, clean body, no major mechanicals, then;
Service/timing belt
996/314 brakes
RS2 turbo
RS2 exhaust manifold
RS2 injectors
RS2+ software
Then enjoy using it and tinker (one bit at a time so its never off the road for long)
17x8 wheels
Koni shocks
Re bush as required
Exhaust to taste
Uprated intercooler
Seats
etc
It will always be an older car, so will have associated issues.
I really miss the traction, you could get on the throttle so hard and early compared to a 2wd car!
I do not miss the front end push on turn in, I think that would be hard to go back to, but its really just a different driving style.Comment

Absolutely
Evo 5,6, TME... Were my teenage dream cars... Together with the Nissan Skyline R34 GTR... Luckily now I have them both
But I didn't try the Nissan yet...can't speak about it.
About your last question... I can honestly say I don't miss any S2,not a single day. I'd miss them if I had a Focus TDCI but that's not the case.
If you think that you should buy another S2, then go for it and own what you you think will make you happier
But I suggest you to try different cars before buy another endless troubleshooting S2. ( Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Nissan...)
To have a good, quick, reliable and funny S2 you'll need to spend 10k £ + and maybe years to do it if not done at the same time
I'd be very happy owning at least for one year a Honda S2000 as a trackday toy

If you bought another S2 and it developed issues or died, would you be prepared to fix it or pay somebody to fix it?
It will at some point develop running issues (old turbo car), so if you are not prepared to deal with that I would probably avoid.Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

Good point there, that is definately a real con of the 5 pot Audi's. The new alu 5 pot engine will help with that aspect I assume. Would be good to try a 07K converted S2 or type 85.Comment

It's easy to loose the plot. I had a go in a CLA AMG the other week. Want one badly. Don't have £45k though
It was an epic car, better at everything than my coupe, except the noise. But it madeup for that by making a massive crack every upshift! Merc are finally getting it right for me. The new range look good and are finally exiting cars. **** new Audis, Merc are beating them at their own game
Anyway, I digress. IMHO you can't get everything you want for your budget.Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt

Yes, been thinking the same myself, I think my car was the most fun with the RS2 setup.
Just need to find a blue pearl ABY with perfect body, should have bought Jason's ...Comment

I think its a quattro gearbox issue, the driveshafts come out behind the engine, pushing the engine forward and the front wheels back.
Audi have started to move the driveshafts forward

If Audi took that a step further the front diff could be mounted beside the engine, or in front of it

Or use an R8 drivetrain backwards

If you look at an Audi beside another car the front wheels are alot further back, some other cars have the wheels right out on the corners.Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

Yes I know the wheels are behind the engine, but I can imagine a lighter engine in front of them will help and is easier than trying to find and fit a gearbox that pushes the wheels more to the front
