Cheers, yep studs out ill use a stud remover socket I think .

Also just finally cracked my crank bolt and removed pulley and belt etc.... Whoever did the last cambelt I think reused the crank bolt as it's got thread lock all over it !!

No wonder it was tight. even the idler pulley bolt has thread lock on .

I wouldn't bother removing the studs if you don't have to if they strip the threads from the head you'll have a right headache.

So on from this , I'd removed engine gearbox and subframe , to refresh all while apart , change engine and gearbox mounts, and subframe bushes. So engine on the stand ,cleaned up gearbox, fixed few niggles now rebuilding back up . Just fitted Rs2 exhaust manifold on new studs and nuts .. and have to say , I wouldn't wanna try it with the engine in the car ffs !! Bad enough with it on a stand, the4 ruduced studs are a real pain in the derrière !!....

I'm gonna do engine , fit new clutch , bolt together all inc subframe then raise the lot up in to car . ... hopefully gotta be easiest way!! ?

Glad to hear your making good progress.

I always remove the front end when changing an engine, it doesn't take long to whip the bumper, cross member and slam off and it makes life so much easier.

Another interesting thread, excuse the pun :-). Haven't needed to remove anything in the exhaust manifold area as yet and not exactly enthusiastic about having to, from what i've read here.

I tend to use stainless deformed thread stiffnuts, otherwise known as "prevailing torque" lock nuts on exhaust systems, rather than nyloc, which melts out in hot areas. They don't rust, nor fall off with temp cycling. Not expensive and on ebay in all the usual sizes...
