    maf in ipa

Guy's how often should I be cleaning maf?
Does IPA need changing every time?
At just over £5 a bottle I hope not.
    Cheers.

well, its got to the stage where im cleaning my MAF and ISV every 3 - 4 months so ive started re-using my IPA. Cleaning MAF in IPA seems to be a temporary solution untill you purchase a new unit.

        jas say's 3 years, ski say's 3-4 months
I've read a few threads on this cleaning question, and it seems everybody has there own ideas on this one.
I'll do it once a year, can't say fairer than that.
        Thanks for the input.

If your PCV system is good then you can clean it once a year for peace of mind.

Ski I would say you've got to much PCV vapour going into your system if your having to clean it that much.

also using a preoiled filter such as k + n clags it up quite a bit.

              Never cleaned mine either!

Once a year max unless you have other issues.

I would change the IPA for clean stuff though...

How does the PCV system affect it guys? engine breathes fumes downwind of the maf doesn't it?
I'm also on a K&N and have been for the three and a half years I've owned the car, it was on it before that too. I think this myth of the preoiled K&N is down to over zealous oiling by owners
My point above was just in reply to the question of whats the interval of cleaning the maf, in that I've never cleaned mine ever. Not had a need too.
Would it not be a possibility that the maf is dead if it needs cleaning every 3/4 months? like maybe the burn off cycle isn't working when the engine is switched off?
That'd make more sense, to me anyway.

Air gets blown back through the maf and airbox even though there is a dump valve on the system. You can hear the air especially on an RS2 airbox or cone filter on recirc.

But that air you can hear is boost being released back into the system from the recirc valve, not fumes from the breather. And if your PCV system isn't healthy, doesn't that mean no fumes get recycled?

Still, the maf hot wire is heated to 1000°c for one second to burn off any contaminates.
Would it not be this cycle that's failed? 1000°c is damn hot, hot enough to burn off whatever little coating of crap is on a wire.

Which ever it is, I'm glad I don't have to do it, I hate the smell of that stuff

I think I've cleaned my MAF once in about 4 years, just to see if it would make a difference. It didn't. I've been running a K&N cone filter pretty much the whole time too BTW.

Maybe your MAF burn-off isn't working. Details of how to test it are on here on s2central.

Jason is right - the PCV fumes are ingested downwind of the MAF.

I've never cleaned mine, but its running a bit keik at the minute. Need to put the spare MAF on and see how she goes. I have found a UK porsche specialist that claims to be able to test and recalibrate MAFs like ours. I'm going to contact them to see if I can get going on that front. Once I establish some trust with the outfit I may ask for some folk to offer up their MAF for tests as I want to gather some realworld data from their flowbench - with and without screens - S2 and RS2 variants. So that we can put an end to all the speculation, rumours and allegations on the subject.

                          you missunderstood.

Jas hasnt ever cleaned his (its in good condition) (i.e. when you buy a new car you dont need to clean it for good 4 years or even more, then you tent to clean it more and more often)

My sensors are old and on their way out so i need to clean them more often.

i have a new PCV and new flametrap if that what u meant Jamo? Did I understand that right?

Plus the fact im using open air filter, means i get oil on my MAF more than others.

I cleaned the MAF twice on my car in the 4ish years I owned it - I had an open cone filter and my PCV system was, to coin a phrase, shot. I feel sure it improved a few running issues at the time. I used fresh IPA each time (and not the beer with the same name!).
