I noticed that the pin-out for the ODBII connector (SAE J1962) defines the K and L lines as:
7. K line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4
15. L line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4
So I suppose the question is, to what extent is our Motronic ECU compatible with those ISO standards? I found a bit more detail on what those standards mean in this pdf:

As an aside, I found a thread which shows that the 1995 A6 2.8 V6 was certified as OBDII compliant (although presumably irrelevant to this topic due to it having a completely different ECU).

The S2 OBD is a subset / precursor to formal OBD2 comms. There are lots of OBD scanners that talk to older VW/Audi machines like ours but they have to support the correct protocols. Some code readers do not support all of the available protocols across the umpteen manufacturers. Try VCDS Lite on your 16-pin plug to make sure you lashed it up right.
The plug itself is pretty simple - K - L, 12V and 0VPaul Nugent

The main advantage of these over the factory 2x2 plugs should be obvious for anyone who has ever needed to plug Vcds or a code reader into their car.
I am happy to sell them for what I paid plus cable and a token amount for wiring them up - they need a special crimp tool that most folk won't have. The raw kits can be found individually on fleabay for 3-4 quid but I am providing a made up cable that just needs wired up to factory loom positions. I will post "how to" instructions here of course. I expect something like 50cm cable length will suffice - anyone can shorten or extend from that.
I expect price to be in region of 8-10 quid including uk delivery but i need to confirm that.
Two of the ten are claimed already as follows -

Another thread revival. Sorry I dropped the ball on these. All the parts are still here and nobody is out of pocket.
I will start making them up over course of next week or so and start working thru the list of names who expressed interest. 10 quid each I reckon.Paul Nugent

I have the first four made today - 10 quid each including UK postage... I have kept the wire tails quite short so everyone can custom fit as they like - no point in me wasting metres of precious cable !Paul Nugent
