Believe it or not - this engine has a cold air intake system - for the alternator... See the air scoop behind bumper grill - where the oil cooler lives on an S2. This should be an easy mod someday for nice cold ramair effect into a new improved airbox !

The oil looks like it seriously needs changed - look at the glar thru the filler cap !
Think a jolly good oil flush agent is required on this one.Attached FilesPaul Nugent

I'd only ever read of the brake master cylinders with a bleed nipple on them. This old girl actually has one... Note as well for V6 (AAH) aficianados - the LHD version has a vacuum servo, but physical space restrictions puts a hydraulic servo into play for RHD applications.
The brakes are noticably less powerful on this car versus the S2 - despite having same size disc and calipers. I have just checked the family album and sure enough the 1992 V6 shipped with a smaller master cylinder than the S2 - so there is another easy upgrade for the future.Attached FilesPaul Nugent

Looks like all of my previous carsNow some really weird stuff... Clearly someone has gone mad with a drill on the airbox at some point - trying to make it flow more air in. Pity they hadn't first seen to the fact this car has a not air intake system.
The flap you see in the airbox is thermally controlled - in ambient air it draws in air heated above the exhaust manifold... as air temp rises higher the flap closes that door and draws in air from behind the headlight. I tested the flap with a hot air gun and freezer spray - it works - but its crap design IMHO. I will have to sort that.
Anyway - the extra airbox holes just help the engine draw in yet more hot air from this area in the engine room.

So off to work then - underneath a very grimy engine bay - armed only with a few stiff brushes (an old Autoglym alloy wheel brush is brilliant) and a bottle of degreaser I set to work on cleaning up most of the muck... Not cos I am OCD - but so I can then see where the leak is coming from.
Used a spraybottle filled with water to rinse it off - couldn't be bothered to roll it onto driveway for a hose session - knowing full well it would take longer to clean the oily shyte off the tarmac. I can cope with oil & water on my garage floor OK though. I caught the worst of it in an old basin anyway. Still an orrible job though - must say that oily stuff preserves things nicely underneath - that is one advantage.Paul Nugent

The car was pretty clean already but I figured it deserved a good spruce up. It has nice paint by and large... Some swirls and stone chips but considering the age - its great paint. Gave it the full three stage Meguiars treatment then various Autoglym products on the bumpers, tyres and interior. The AG glass polish did an especially nice job.
So all cleaned, polished & waxed its starring in its own little shiny show - red edition

The camera phone and light doesn't really do it justice - it is absolutely gleaming. I dunno what it is about Tornado Red but I just love it... My old Typ85 GT was the same colour so there is some history there.
This is it - just before taking my excited 7yr to school in it for the first time. His friends have already been asking is it faster than the 'green car'... Kids ehh

Paul, would you like me to move this thread to the "Car Polishing & Detailing" section for you?

Looks good so far. Now don't get distracted from the S2 will you.

Cheers,

LOL @ phatty - I was thinking about you when I was claying it and looking over at three bottles of stuff to apply thinking - how can he be bothered to do this so often... It is soooh boring, but the end result was nice... An orbital machine would be much more fun and would impart an even better finish in less time.
The green machine is already tucked up in the garage - looking mean and dirty - with the longest job sheet on the windscreen I have ever conjured up for a car in a long time... More on that in another thread - will be phased work for sure though - and 'big red' is going to need some attention along the way to keep me rolling.Paul Nugent

All joking aside - I actually like that for now - cos I have scraped the *** of my S2 down a farm lane four times a week for waaaaay too long... Ground clearance is good... So good you can whip the undertray on/off without a jack - nifty innit !
It would look ace on a set of S2 bumpers, door trims and springs - with white alloys, but don't distract me !Paul Nugent

Job sheet on Big Red looks a bit like this currently -
Priority 1 / Pre next MOT
Rear brake discs & pads
Bleed brakes
Probably a new windscreen
Side indicators (source 2nd hand already)
Inoperative foglights (forgot to mention that one - but I fixed that - someone had relay in the wrong place)
Fit battery clamp
Rear droplinks need renewed - something clunks at the rear !
Priority 2
New central locking pump / controller (sourced already) - this is why cabin lights don't work
Oil flush and change - full service actually needed with plugs etc
New MFTS (expensive wee ******) - temp guage is OK
Test radiator fans / relays for operation
Treat the oil leaks - probably valley pan gasket where the PCV breather apparatus lives
Priority 3
Recharge Aircon - it works a bit - probably needs converting to R134
B5 RARB - 15mm from S4/RS4
Renew all the airpipes and get the variable intake valve working again
Maybe for fun if I decide she is a keeper
DeCAT - can be done legally - maybe get two nice stainless downpipes and a sexy Y section in place of factory setup - let flavour flood out
Tweak the ECU maybe someday - probably in line with airbox/MAF tweaks and decent Bosch injectors - must respond to more timing I feel
Poly bushes all round for zippier handling - along with S2 Sedan springs & uprated dampersPaul Nugent

The very next job is to finish degreasing the undertray (ahh joy)...
Then fit the GTech for a laugh and try to characterise how this old girl is driving - as she is today needing a service, with unknown fuelling accuracy and that disconnected intake flap... Oh and the wonderful intake system which has to go - forgot that on my list.
What do we reckon as to weight of this motor then - 1550kg ish ??????Paul Nugent
