It was you I spotted going through Caernarfon then. Looked very nice on the road!

Managed to 'ruin' a hydro lifter yesterday evening
Was on a spirited drive and pulled it past 7k trough 4 gears a couple of times, did a few roundabouts, and when slowing down I instantly heard a tappet ticking. It was clearly only 1 that was playing up, but the strange thing is that even after 15-20km
of easy driving it was still ticking. This morning i started it again cold, and the noise was still there, so I went over to my mechanic to let him confirm that it certainly was a tappet noise.
He confirmed, and right after he said that it stopped ticking for 10sec, after which it started again with short periods of ticking and going away.
On the way back home it continued to tick, so it must be really knackered.
They were changed by the old (heavy 82gr) version around 4 years ago, and I've read
that they don't like sustained high revs. Oil level is at max btw, and was recently changed.
I ordered a set of Schrick hyrdo lightweight lifters (50gr) that should be lots better. And with 660gr less weight on the valvetrain part that's a nice bonus too
Half the price of OEM btw.
Anyone else had such a lifter that was beyond repair after a drive?Comment

I have noticed that a hydro ticks loud it needs either to cool down and through a cold start up with high oil pressure it fills up again and then stops.
Another option is to hold relative high pressure (lets say holding the revs to 2000-2500 rpm and not idle since at hot idle the oil pressure is fairly low.Go Holset or Go RS4Comment

Replaced the hydros with the schrick ones. Didn't have any problems since, but it shows that +7000rpm can kill the old style heavy lifters (AD).
The one ones were 70g filled, and the Schrick ones 51g... so 19g x 20 is 380g weight loss in the valvetrain
Also changed the fuel filter. Always thought I should look into it since I hadn't really
found any evidence of it ever being changed in the big map with invoices since '95.
And yes indeed, at it's 233.000km it has never been changed!
Did it without dropping the tank and taking it out went ok, putting the new one back
in a bit more difficult... but doable in the end!
12/94... original filter it is.

dirty stuff

Me too on three of my S2s. :roll eyes:
Anyone who doesn’t definitely know their fuel filter has been changed in the last three years, minimum, should change it out to be sure. Pinking in my car went away after I changed my filter. Also presumably it may not be doing the fuel pump any favours, which could also very well be the original pump on people’s cars.
Not a problem on an urS6 as the fuel filter is under the bonnet.
You’re doing your car proud. Remember reading the thread when you first got it. The photos of the journey home were cool. It's been through a lot since then.
Continued best wishes.

Very fast delivery btw.
And besides the weight difference you can notice the treatened surface.Comment

Since a few weeks I noticed some hesitations and unsmooth behaviour on part-throttle with some boost. Got worse with dropping punch at higher revs, turbo taking longer to spool up, non smooth power curve (constant slight dips) and worse fuel consumption.
Last sunday I then finally got it at it's worst, when it started to cut boost at 0.5bar (voilent stuff!). did a faultscan and mixture adaptation came up.
Endresult: threw away the ITG panel filter, cleaned the MAF, and everything was perfect again, together with something that feels like +50hp.
When I installed the ITG I tried to remove most of the oil, but it seems that it isn't
compatible... Strange that so many people on here are using them (and K&N) without problems?Comment
