Interesting choice. AGZ? Gearbox is bolt on?

Its an AGZ out of a Passat. It came with the gearbox, and has an adapter plate in between. Only thing missing is the MAF sensor and the power steering pulley has a dent in it. Other than that it's good to go!
I always thought I would end up doing a 1.8T swap, but this gives me the unbeatable 5cyl sound without having to throw away my new radiator and AC system. And most importantly, is has relatively low mileage and it was cheap.
The down side is that it's heavy, and less easy to tune than the 1.8T. But I can live with that.

Cool engine choice although the 1.8T would have been the sensible choice I guess

It has been done before with this engine in a cabriolet, also in NL.

You mean with the VR? So far I've found two examples of VR5 swaps, so I'm not the first. Sure the 1.8T would probably have been an easier swap. But as said, this one was cheap.
I had to wait for parts so I decided to clean & prime the block. Not sure about the final colour yet.

The overall length of the block is the same as the previous 4-pot. So a VR6 would easily fit too.
Also changed all the oil seals on the gearbox. Hopefully I can find some engine mounts next week when the scrappers are back from their holidays.

Also found some good as new timing chains, so no worries there.

Found some rust behind the door hinges, did some welding, and gave all sills a respray.
No picture of the finished result unfortunately.

Did an upgrade on the grease pit with some better lights, new floor and oil resistant paint. Makes life a lot easier. Will do the walls in the same paint at a later stage.

And all finished up after some Sigmacover 280 and new sealant.
The bracket will get a fresh zink-dip.

Did you find an Audi 90 engine mounts or have something else in mind?

Engine in!

Didn't get much done the last few weeks, I was busy with other things and waiting for parts. However I did get the battery tray in position, as well as the strut brace.
IMG_20170130_140540.jpgIMG_20170213_191727.jpgIMG_20170213_191813.jpg

This weekend I finally got hold of some 90 engine mount-brackets. So welded those in, made some additional brackets for my universal engine mounts and hung the engine in.
Not sure if i'll keep the solid rubber mounts, but they'll do for now.
IMG-20170213-WA0000.jpgIMG-20170213-WA0002.jpgIMG_20170213_181828.jpgIMG_20170213_191631.jpg
Bought 80 V6 driveshafts to accomodate the gearbox, and some outer joints from an A4 B5 TDI to fit the wheelhubs.
Found out that the outer joints where way too large so I modified them a bit:
IMG_20170128_201909.jpgIMG_20170128_220741.jpg
Took almost 2cm off.

Next up is making sure everything fits, weld up the exhaust manifold and downpipe, en then take everything out again for paint.
Sorry for the crappy phone pics

It's in, it runs, and it drives.

Modified Corrado VR6 manifold:

galvanised front-end:

It turned out the engine was too high and I couldn't close the bonnet, so had to modify the subframe again.

Still on 4-cyl springs, so front is way too low.
I've ordered an Audi 90 40-40 lowering kit, hopefully that will give the stance I'm lookin' for.
