thanks for all the help and advice guys just taken it in and the mechanic said its definetly bottom end but their gonna wip the sump of today and have a look!Had to catch the bus to work this morning first time since i left school (3 years ago!)As both cars have now let me down!must admit though think the bus fare is lot cheeper than what the audi costs me in fuel to travel 40+mile each day!

right the mechanic said it maybe piston rings???But surely if you do a compression test you would be able to eliminate this? Also wouldnt the plugs be covered in oil from oil passing in the bore?Either that or the big ends gone.
        thanks

Yeah, find a mechanic who knows what he's talking about! There's a big difference between problems at the top and bottom of the engine. The knocking you described sounds very much like a big end, piston rings don't knock! A simple compression test would prove you have a problem with a ring or two. If so, what caused a ring to break? I doubt very much this is the case, unless you have major tuning issues.

i think he is a good mechanic and has done lots of work for us in the past, but he said the noise travels right through the engine and is hard to tell where it is from.I would not have thought that piston slap would cause a knocking noise,as when the rings go their is no reason for a knocking noise to occur note the name (piston slap!)gonna get a second opinion then call in the farms polish mechanic! He rebuilt the head not long ago and knows lots and lots about the car having maintained it for the last 8 years.Right so its is most likely to be big end bearings gone?Any chance it could be the small ends or is this very uncommon? The car has not really been tuned up that much bar the conversion, which takes it to 300bhp,although the engine/gearbox had a complete rebuild 730000miles ago.

A good mechanic can tell what's gone. You're right that sound travels through the engine, however a bit of wood or the handle of a hammer will allow you to listen to the engine to determine what's up. Are you seeing low oil pressure since the problem started? Have you had the front pulley off recently? This will cause a knocking if it's loose.

yea i dont think it is the piston rings, and the polish mechanic who serviced the car rebuilt the top end and replaced the top end bearings only 3000miles ago and reckons its the crank bearings gone from the oil light coming on?The front pulley was off in febuary when the timing belt was changed i think?as a new pulley was fitted.Could it be this come lose maybe?Or the crank bearings collapsed?

If you have got the sump off why dont you take the big end caps off and have a look at the shells, push the piston up the bore you would see both halves of each shell. Its not good to put them back together without replacing the bolts but given your issues thats the least of you probs at the mo.

Dont sell it as it is you will loose even more money, sadly you now need to spend more on it to get it back.... good luck.

so you can check all the bearings in the bottom end from removing the sump?Cant get it onto a ramp tell friday so just gonna have to wait.Although last night i checked all the plugs to see if their was any oil on them from the rings going and they are all as good as new, also no sign of oil inside the piston bore. But another mechanic now seems think it is the crank bearings which have gone, so it either small/big/crank bearing !Cant wait to find out!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

News update!have got the head off and the small ends have gone.I now need to sort out what to do with the car!Could you guys give me a rough value of the car once it has been repaired? Also say if i was gonna rebuild the engine now its in the workshop, and fit the parts for a high hp engine what parts would i need to be fitting,shells/conrods/pistons.Not sure what to do without the figures, and without knowing what the value of the car would be due to the high mileage/age,so if anyone could give me a rough idea please!
                          thanks again

You've already got a good base there with the RS2 turbo + manifold, so I'd be tempted to just get it put back together and get a cnoservative MRC remap. If I were you, I'd keep the car to get my monies worth out of it, stick a set of forged rods in while she's in bits and remap her for max power

Or, you'd be better off stripping out the RS2 goodies and going with a standard mani/turbo/ecu. You'd get good money back on your old RS2 parts. But I'd stick with the car, the rebuild will cost you a small fortune but do it properly and the grin will be worth it

                            Cheers

The Nothelle conversion doesn't use an RS2 turbo, it uses a K26 variant which produces around 320 bhp, details are on the forum

yep i read through some threads and i think no one really knows what the turbo is!I think when it was a mrc doug said it was a rs2 turbo with smaller fins??Or something had been changed/same with the manifold which in the conversion staes rs2 manifold with parts welded in.At the moment the car is only running stock bhp since having a new ecu earlier this year and i was hoping to get it back to mrc for a remapp. But looks like all my savings will be going towards the rebuild! So what pistons/rods/shells should i be looking at using in the rebuild and wheres the best place to get them from!As ross said it will be worth it in the end!although this subaru is beginning to wear on me!suprised a few other drivers on the road with it,but its still not a stratch on the s2!
