Just another "Don't Do it" from me.

Your car is lovely Martyn. You have transformed it, don't throw it all away!

    Cheers,

    Steve.

You'll surely be sick of me at this stage !

Dest, don't do it ! Take your time and get the finances together to 2871 / 3071 it and all the other things that go with such a turbo.

If Corey would hurry up with mine, I could give you a go in it - 3071 etc..

Whatever else you buy, you'll end up spending more money on it than just the purchase price, as you are like the rest of most of us on here, a serial modifier who can't leave it alone, "I just want to make this bit a bit better".

IMHO much better to spend it on the engine of the Avant, it already looks stunning.

However, you could also have that itchy feet syndrome, whereby a car never stays long before it's replaced, like Henry VIII used to say to his wives, "I won't keep you long".

Whatever you decide, please keep us informed either way.

      Kind regards.

My problem is this, I simply cannot afford to RS2 or 3071 spec the car. It would take me literally years to save up for the bits!
Do I do that, and in the meantime drive round in a car that doesnt excite me?
Dont get me wrong, the car IS fast, its just that its totally different from what Im used to and enjoy!
I know I could sell it, buy another Cav Turbo (how ironic one was posted on this thread LOL) and have enough cash left over to give it just under 300bhp and masses of torque.
The annoying thing is, I know that the S2 IS the better car, and once RS'ed it would surpass the Cav in everyway!
I would LOVE to be able to do this, as I DO love it still, and really dont want to sell it. All your comments saying its one of the best on here really surprised me, as Ive never felt that, and know mine is well down the list from what ive seen! Not that it isnt nice to hear of course

So, now Im stuck.... if any of you have any ideas of how I can improve things without spending big money, Im all ears
Big money to me is anything over 200 quid at the moment lol. I even thought about selling the S8's, but that wouldnt cover getting everything sorted, and Id be left with the car not looking as good as it does.

I have 300 quid coming in next week that I can spend on the car, this is a one off, so wont be able to buy one bit off the RS2 list, and then another in a few weeks/months time, so do I use it for a decat? Will that make much noticable difference?
Do I then use the other half to get a dump valve? Yeah, I understand you lot on here think they are abit chavvy, and wont make it any quicker, but it would take me abit closer to the fun I used to have in the Cossie and Cav!

        Im all ears...

        EDIT:
Just out of interest, can someone do a quick list of ALL parts needed to RS2 or 3071 it, including prices?

Hi mate, sorry to hear your dilemma, what a bout a 2nd hand RS2 turbo,(£300.00) that'll get you over the 300bhp barrier. The trouble is these cars are getting on a bit now so will always need £££'s being thrown into then..

I understand older cars always need money to keep them running, I can afford the maintenance to do that, but I cant afford a big outlay to get it to RS2 spec!

Wouldnt adding an RS2 turbo give it more lag and feel even slower?

Dest, I know what you mean about the cossie and cav, the heavyweight S2 will never feel like that without either serious dietry surgery or a bigger turbo. The T3 on a cossie is capable of over 300bhp on a 2.0 engine so is a fair bit bigger than the k24 and more in line with an RS2 in terms of specific power. My mate's 300bhp 3 door was MENTAL, made my S2 feel and look slow until the bottom end decided it had had enough and the car was running 265, then the S2 was identical up to 'motorway speeds' Was chuffed as there's more to come from my S2.

You have 2 options for removing the Audiness from the Avant.

The first is as you have identified, fit RS2 goodies. Needs to be done in 1 chunk and is pretty expensive although secondhand parts are available. An RS2 turbo on a standard ABY would take away from the low end and add to the top end.

The other is to make the car inherently more raw, remove some of the sound deadening, add a louder exhaust, louder DV like a Turbosmart, you've already got the suspension sorted, make all the respenses crisper and as a result make the car more the way you want it to be. My current project is to try and make the car as efficient as possible. This will increase power by minimising losses but also reducing the rotational mass of parts and the weight of the cat makes all responses a lot better, gives more revs and will increase my level of enjoyment because we crave the same thing, driving involvement. This is why the cav and cossie feel so much better, they are lighter and so more nimble.

A single mass flywheel conversion gives more everywhere and is a bit rawer too, finger in the air on the figures, I'd guess it gives 500rpm more up top ralising 7k rather than 6.5k before the power drops off. I'm chuffed with mine on a Homefries and with the exhaust sorted, 7A cams and possibly some updated chips I think it'll be a match for a standard RS2 with 500rpm+ less lag. Don't forget the option of over-running the k24, they're cheap so when it goes pop, stick another on. It's frowned upon but using a bleed valve or mechanical boost will make the car rawer too... it's not the preferred method on here but it's another reason why the S2 feels refined compared to teh aforementioned 2 others.

£300 would cover a SM flywheel conversion, the clutch is £150 for OE from VAG Parts, a FW is £30, get the face skimmed and then get it fitted (not quite that simple but it gets you a new clutch too

The flywheel sounds good, but I would have to add labour ontop of those prices, and that would rocket it way out of my league!
The exhaust note is 100% sorted, and plenty loud enough! Jamo has been in the car and as his comment on this thread suggests, he LOVED the sound of it! (as do I )

I dont think an RS2 turbo would solve my problems, as taking away from the bottom end would make things even worse for me. I prefer to have more power low down as Ive never been one to thrash a car at the top end!

Decatting would help free things up somewhat, and also save alittle weight (it all helps )
Im definitly thinking about the Turbosmart too, as its abit psychological; a car doesnt have to BE fast to FEEL or SOUND fast!

Im also tempted to let someone else drive me in it at the MRC open day (aslong as they dont kill it!) Id get the missus to do it, but shes scared of going fast

I also beleive part of my problem is alot of open roads in the counry with very rarily the chance to go head to head with others to get a gauge of how my car performs. Its a lonely world racing yourself all the time :mischeif:

im up the road if you want a racehow about nitrous?cheapest way to add another 50-100bhp,get rid of the cats for a bit more response from the engine, like andy said you could always push the k24 a bit further too

Not much point me racing you is there
TBH, Ive never been a big fan of nitrous, Ive always seen it as a mod you have to keep paying for. Id rather mod it with things that once paid for, dont cost all the time use them (apart from when they break lol)

Hmmm... bleed valve, decat and turbosmart might be a recipe for abit more fun then....

I had this the other week and just in 6th at motorway speeds I was amazed by how much faster it feels. The torque is the key on a k24. My mate driving wouldn't floor it cos he was a little scared about it being my car, he knows just how much work has gone into it...

GTech solves that, it's like a Gran Turismo time attack device and you just have to beat your best score

Labour costs are something I usually forget about but paid to have mine converted as it's a killer job on the garage floor.

The other thing to spend £300 on is some lightweight wheels, makes a good difference also.

Seems that you're in a bit of a catch 22 here... do what I did the other week, remove EVERYTHING from the interior, seats, carpet, spare wheel, plastic trim etc. etc. That'll give you the buzz you need. It was a shame to put it all back in

Might be pretty good fun but keep an eye on the turbo bearings or get a 360 degree thrust bearing in there and it should last longer. Turbo Dynamics offered me one for a rebuild.

If it was a Coupe I would happily strip it out 100%, and keep it like it.
I dont think the Avant suits that look really...

As for the S8s, heavy or not, they are going nowhere!

I had various wheels on my Cav, and TBH I never felt any noticable difference between weights, I think alot of that is in the mind more than anything, but thats just my views on it.

I wouldnt put it anywhere near its limit, Im a firm believer in running less power and having reliabilty than having loads but putting things on the edge.
If anything, Im not 100% sure on getting a bleed valve atall.
I will see how the other two things perform first
