Everyone: Seals are made of rubber, they don't rust.
My diff input seal:

Rusted through in spots it would seem.
The real pain as a result is i am having a real issue getting it out. Screws just pull right out as the remaining metal is so weak....
The fun will continueLeave a comment:

Because my antenna base has long been tossed away and the wiring is a bundle in a storage bin.... was it amplified or not? I see an alternative for all of $40 US but not amplified.
Will it really matter when the radio stations in my podunk town all suck anyways?! LolLeave a comment:

there are a few alternatives, some are also NLA, some may not be available on your side of the pond.

Got a good look under it, definitely the input leakin. Luckily, the part number is listed on a vw parts site that is a dealership in BC. Which means i should be able to get it at my local vw dealer for cheap. Now i just hafta make the counterhold tool out of some scrap steel.
Got the heater box blend doors re foamed and the box put back together. Some racecar work to do then on to allllll the cleaning!Leave a comment:

Input as in front seal to propshaft? Think that one can be done with diff in situ.
However, i would check the seals you have replaced first as sometimes they dont sit square or go in too far or not enough. Without the vag tool not always easy to get right. Ask me how i know.Leave a comment:

&^$@$^&$
Moving things around and i noticed oil on the ground. There's only one fluid in there.... gear oil in rear diff. There's one seal i didn't replace because it didn't seem dirty there but.... the input seal is so pooched it leaks while sitting.... i guess it was that empty when i bought the car lol.
It would SEEM i could get at it on my lift without having to drop the the rear subframe? Seem feasible to anyone who's dealt with it before?Leave a comment:

What are you guys doing for antennas now? The original fuba is long FUBARED (if you know you know lol).
I COULD weld up the hole in the roof at the risk of warpage, but what are the alternatives nowadays?
I think i am done with the b4 retrofitting now. I believe i am gonna take a break from the thinking work and just go through the bins of parts and clean everything so they aren't so horrible to handle from now on. Swapping the original struts back on so the coils stay nice n tidy. i'll probably be pretty sparse with the pics for a while as a result. Weather seems like it actually wants to give us a proper summer this year so lotsa sanding and manual labour ain't happening lol. Priority will be having pints by the pool instead!Leave a comment:

Dashboard mounting sorted. One more bracket for the glovebox and it's sorted i think. The drivers side was easy as all the extra holes were already there, just needed rivnuts. The passenger side needed all the holes drilled for what was the airbag support. Speaking of, that is a source of frustration. I could have SWORN i dissected the passenger airbag such that i kept the mounting bracket for it. But of course i can't find it now. So i'll have to fabricobble something together so i can mount the gutted bag to the dash securely.... good times.

Got the engine bay brackets in and engine out today.
Now comes the tedious part of smoothing it all out ready for priming....

All my other mechanical nightmares are dealt with so i got the car back in the shop this afternoon. First up was the abs unit bracket tacked in place.

One bracket on the other side and then a little tab for the coolant reservoir to go. By next weekend the engine will be out again for the forseeable future.Leave a comment:

Played some more this afternoon between meetings. Wet sanded a small section and cleared it. Put it in sunlight before it orange peeled again and looked at it. Very neat indeed.
Wife took a look and i have spousal agreement (
).
Looks like we have a winner here. Going to do a full wetsand and buff (to try and get a semblence of a proper job lol) over the next few days and confirm.Leave a comment:
