20v Turbo engine into Type 85 CQ

I know this has been done by several people on the S2 forum, and I’m just testing the waters.

A Type 85 Coupe quattro with 016 gearbox.

Thinking of swapping the KV for an AAN/3B/ABY 20v turbo engine.

Now I’m being told the gearing’s going to be all wrong and the running gear under a Type 85 coupe quattro (driveshafts/CV’s etc) won’t cope with a 270/300bhp 20v turbo.

First question… How bad is the gearing of an 016 against a 20v turbo engine? Say at 70mph in 5th etc?

Secondly… Will the running gear under a type 85 coupe quattro explode in catastrophic fashion or just get on with it… (270/300bhp 20v turbo’d horses and torque)?

    Many thanks

been there done that got the tea shirt, I mean rally car

running gear will be fine in fact on the coupe quattro it is 4.1 exactly the same as all s2 and rs2. best to change your drive shafts to either ur q type or s2 type . if you go for ur you will need to throw the frount coupe ones away and fit frount ur struts, hubs, drive shafts but the rear on a coupe q is the same as the rear on a ur only ,on the ur they have the bigger drive shaft ,hub and are five stud. The s2 is a good option ,changing all 4 struts ,shafts, hubs etc but other things like roll bar mounting r also different on s2 wich may mean changing f/r sumframes and wishbones, so id go for a full set of ur q [turbo] struts, hubs, drive shafts, flanges, wish bones can be used from the coupe with ur parts as listed but you will need ur ball joints, ray

      Ian,
I think you know my car and if I'm right we met at The Star in Chessington at Club Audi meets?
Well my car is was running 390bhp quite happilly. Components seem well up to handling the power. As for the gearbox, I have been told it's not strong enough as 3rd and 4th are on hollow shafts. To date I have not had any issues.
As for the gearing, whilst it's true this could be better for doing sprints as about 58mph is all I managed in 2nd, I still think 4.5 seconds 0-60 with 2 gears is too bad. On the road, it makes the power quite usable, but due to high gearing not very economical (4000 - 4200rpm = 80mph or there abouts). Having said that, I have been asking about gearboxes and have to do something now, especially since I'm running 500+bhp now. May have something in the pipeline
Any other info you might like, please ask.
      Cheers
      CHris

          Hi Chris and thanks

Yep, remember your car very well and it's one of the reasons I'm looking into this. I've currently got a standard type 85 CQ and it was bought with modifying it in mind. I'm not looking to make 'big' power (330+) and the annual mileage is likely to be about 2500, but, basically, I'd like to drop the 20vt onto the 016 box. I'm not keen on changing the whole drivetrain, mainly through cost, but also the sourcing of a donor vehicle. So to hear your 90quattro running gear is coping with 500bhp is reassuring.

Likewise the 80mph/4200rpm doesn't sound too drastic.

So, put into simple terms... a 300bhp 20v turbo mated to an 016 box and standard type 85CQ drivetrain is quite within reasonable limits/compatable...

          Also...

          Many thanks A1quattro...
Just re-read yours Ray... That's brilliant.. Copied and pasted for future reference...

              Ian,
All I can tell you is that mine has been coping fine.
If you have read any of my posts, you will know that I wish I had not gone away from that old setup. The T34 I had with internal wastegate really had no (ZERO) lag and as a result I think A to B I could keep up with most.
I think if you go with standard running gear you should be fine for usage you are quoting. One upgrade I would recommend is the cast front wishbones (Cheapest I could find them was Quattro Corner).
              Cheers
              Chris

PS. I may have a front IC solution for you (mine for sale or 2 units to be welded together) if need them?

I'll be watching this with interest if that you do go that route and start a thread.

@jogi did your engine bolt straight onto the gearbox as an old member who don't post on this forum now said to me if you put a 20v onto a type 85 gearbox you have to cut it to fit it?

you dont have cut cut any of the gearbox/engine,just need to remove the needle bearing from the end of the crank and replace with older version,BTDT spent about 2 hours trying to get a gearbox onto a 3b,also the bearing that is in the flywheel on 3b's has to come out, someone said it may also need to be machined out in the centre, not sure about this but i will see very soon.An RR flywheel would work without messing about apparently as it doesnt have a bearing.

All the work on mine was done for me so I'm not sure about direct fit, but I can't remember any real issues or I'm sure they would have been reported to me. I have a different clutch (organic) fitted to cope with the extra power and torque. It has managed over 8000 miles and although quite heavy has worked well.
A good place for information would be motorgeek but they seem to favour the mc engine as an install.
                          Cheers

I'm guessing here, but looking at the current market for cars etc I'd think it's going to be an AAN....
