    Sidricks Audi Coupe S2 3B

After amassing all of the parts I needed for a 1.8t conversion on my 1995 4-pot coupe, I weighed up the cost and benifits of doing the conversion against buying a cheap S2 to do up. The S2 won.

Sorry the photos are in the driveway, but the battery is dead and if I parked it on the street for photos there's no guarantee it'd start again without a jump.

I'm not going to lie, it's a bit rough, but for the price I paid it was always going to be a rolling project.

The battery is dead and not holding charge.
There's a deep scratch to the bonnet, scuffs to one wing and rust to another. All 3 will need repaired and painted or replaced.
Rev counter and temp gauge not working (which is fun when the car is silent and you're trying to stop it stalling at junctions!)
There's a wheel bearing esque noise and vibration which I think will be the prop centre bearing due to where the noise is coming from and I can feel it through the gearstick.
Not sure it's quite making power, possible boost leak or slipping clutch, but hard to tell when I had no rev gauge and I've never driven and S2 before.

Will get it up on ramps over the next two weekends with my mechanic friend to see what it needs. It had been standing for a number of years (owned by an elderly gentleman who was ill, was the story I was told) before it was MOTd 2 years ago, driven for a year then laid up for another year, before being (questionably....) MOTd again recently.

My first turbo car and what a change from my 2.0 8v coupe. My driving style will have to change significantly! It's so smooth and silent and I'm used to using the low down torque of my 8v and rarely going above 4k (because there's nothing there). Obviously the complete opposite with the S2.

Updates as and when they happen.

    Go on Sidrick !
Good to see you have bitten the bullitt and got yourself an S2
Btw, a rough S2 is better than no S2 !
Having the same dilemma with my V6 ! Been thinking of putting in a 3b lump but bodywork issues suggest breaking and sourcing the real thing

Looking forward to the updates on this one !
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

        Congratulations on your purchase!

If the temp guage is not working, and the car feels down on power the MFTS (or plug) may be the culprit, BTDT. If you get an ebay boost gauge its handy for diagnostic as mine was running wastegate pressure due the MFTS fault.

You can look at the mot history online if you are curious.

Check the MOT status of a vehicle, get MOT reminders, checklists for MOT testers

            Thanks guys

Andy, I read through your entire thread today, superb work. If the MFTS has failed would it show up on diagnostics? I think it might be the issue but would rather know for sure before replacing parts.

Nice to see someoen buying an S2 to do up and not just to brake!
I wish you all the best of luck with this, soudns like your emphusiasic and this forum is full of helpfull people that are keen to lend a hand or give information where needed.

Re your MFTS. It depends how its failed, have a look at the threads on here. There is a thorough explanation somewhere which shows how to diagnose it.
The easiest thing to do for now though is to pull of the plug, the sensor is under the water manifold, which is under your inlet manifold. There is two sensors there, its the larger of the two.
Then inspect the connections, if the contact pins are rusty then the wiring may be fried. I had this on a few cars and its an easy fix so to speak. If the spade connectors in the sensor are really rusty they may also have snapped off in which case just cleaning them up wont be enough and you will have to replace the sensor.. I would recommend doing that though until you have actually diagnosed whats up with the car..

              Good luck!

My MFTS issue did not show up on diagnostics, it was frustrating.

You can ground out the guage pin on the mfts for a few seconds with somebody watching and you will see if the gauge rises. Also the plug that went onto my MFTS was corroded internally.

I don't know what unplugging the MFTS does on a stock ecu, on my chipped one it lets the car boost, but with a faulty mfts plugged in it limits boost.

Try giving the MFTS a tap with a long socket bar or similar, it might come back to life, otherwise probably the connector, the boot tends to fill with water and corrode away the pins.

And welcome to S2 3B ownership!

Big puddle of greasy fluid under the car today (below radiator area). The power steering was starting to groan just as I pulled into my street last night, and all other resevoirs are full, so I suspect this is the issue

Eek. Got it up on the ramps for my mechanic friend to have a look at what I've bought today. The news varies. It's completely solid underneath, no holes or rot and looks superb, but there are a number of issues.

                        Lovely fuel lines:

Shiny part on the O/S/R driveshaft where the welded exhaust skims it. Exhaust needs replaced from cats back:

I think this is for the diff lock, but it's seized solid. Anyone know a part number and if it's still available?:

Considerable oil leak from the rear of the engine:

Front 2 shocks leaking, rear two not, but most likely because they're near enough empty

N/S handbrake cable and mechanism on caliper seized. O/S/F caliper sticking a bit.

Both headlights required. I can't afford ellipsoids just now

The indicators stopped working completely today (any ideas?!)

He confirmed the car is running flat and has a slight misfire. Really need to get the codes read. Seems better without the MAF plugged in...... it's a brand new item, Bosch number 0280213007 :-\

There's movement in the rear diff. It's likely knackered

Any help with parts would be much appreciated Looks like this is going to be a proper project

On the positive side, I got a replacement battery and found 20p under the drivers seat.

Blue capped pipe is for measuring exhaust CO content (or something similiar).

Fuel lines, a few good threads on here with how toos, not too bad a job along the bottom of the car, a ******* to get up the back of the rack.

Clean up and trace your oil leak.

                              Odd wishbones side to side

Play in diff? When you twist the shafts? Or the whole case moves?

                              Get codes read

Good luck with your project, it will be worth it in the end.
