        Hey guys,

Had a go at fitting my tripcomp/autocheck unit today on my lunch but couldn't figure the wiring. I was under the impression that it was just gonna be an extra loom from the stalks to the clocks but the wiring behind the dash seems to be diferent.

Here's the wiring I have, the white plug goes to the mini check

Here's old mini check and tripcomp/autocheck side by side

Here's the extra wires I got with the trip comp, they have been cut

The original white plug doesn't fit the trip comp at all.

        Any help would be aprichated

I'm guessing on the new tripcomp the black plug should go to the stalk and the white plug to the ecu??

Hi mate, nice looking car you got there.

I'm afraid the auto check is not a straight swap with the mini check system. It requires a whole host of other information to get it to work, things like bulb monitering and fluid levels etc, its a big job to swap it over.

You can however get the trip computer working. This only needs one wire other than the ones to the stalk. Think its a yellow wire from memory from the ecu for fueling. There is a thread on here, that shows you what to do.

You can get a mini check set up with a trip computer that should be a straight swap bar the yellow wire and stalk wires. I have one but the screen has bled, if you want you can buy it off me and swap the screen over for your good one then your sorted. I also have the wiring for the stalks if you need it. PM me I dont want much for it.

Hope that kinda helps a bit

Correct I'm afraid, its a pretty involved upgrade to the autocheck system. You can find a mini-check with a trip computer though, but they are pretty rare.
The yellow wire goes to a yellow 2 pin connector under the dash by the aux relay panel, the other two wires are not used IIRC.

Running gear is looking excellent mate, the copper inserts for the hubs are about ÂŁ10 each I did post the Wabco part number on a thread a while back but now I can't find it! Maybe you can get them cheaper from a Wabco dealer

Looking good bud. Just a side note if your beetle is anything to go by then this is going to be pretty tidy when your done. I also know where your forum name comes from haha. (used to work at volksworld and do all the shows with them still) put up a quick link to the article for your beetle as there are some aircooled fans here mind you not to many!

For those of you wondering, Tom has built a show winning marathon beetle which is truly stunning! Good work on both cars Tom

                    Thanks for the comments guys...

Allthough they are very kind words I think you have me confused with another Tom who owns a marathon beetle haha what are the chances. The guy you mean used to work at VW heritage I think and built a nice cal look marathon

I actually work at absolute VW restoring aircooled cars for a living and I do own a marathon bug that's been around on the aircooled scene for a little while. But is more of a resto cal looker and it was also a show winner

                    It looked like this

But currently it looks like this

I am sure i've seen a thread about this before as i'm sure i've seen the unit before. If so it was an interesting read.

Ooops.... Crossed wires but it's not far off with names, type of job and beetle colour and model. Still good luck with it. One of mine is in that state too mate. Good luck with it! A thread on that would be good too.

Thanks for the heads up on the autocheck guys.

So I received a tripcomp/minicheck unit today in the post, thanks Jim also the correct loom too!

Unfortunately the tripcomp screen had bled so tonight I set about swapping the screen out of the tripcomp/autocheck unit that won't work in my coupe. Dead easy! Here's how it's done

The minicheck top and autocheck below

I started by unscrewing all the screws on the front and splitting the 2halfs

Then unscrewed the small flat head screws holding the board in and very carefully removed that from the plastic housing

Here's the offending unit. You have to prise the black plastic housing over the 3 white tabs on either side using a small flat blade screwdriver

Then it the housing pops off with the LCD screen inside

Here's the leaked one and the good one both removed

Both of the units in bits took over my sofa

Assembly is reversal of removal. Just gotta be carefull with everything but it took like 15min and was no special tools needed, not even a workbench haha. Here's the new screen in the minicheck unit

So if anyone needs an autocheck unit with a leaked tripcomp LCD let me know. Going to install it on my lunch tomorrow, can't wait.

                          Again, big thanks Jim!

Bloody ell mate, that was fast work. Glad you got it sorted and it was an easy swap. Never looked into how to do it myself. Glad you could make use of parts I no longer have a need for

                                Cheers mate,

Fitted the trip comp today but the stalk I have doesn't fit on my steering column, it's too small

Original left and tripcomp one right

                                Does anyone have any ideas?
