Have you looked at the insurance implications of doing this, assuming you plan to use it on the road?

The only way to do this and make it work is to do what Sean was planning
with his A4 quattro and that is to move the engine backwards in the engine bay as
      much as possible.
If you leave the engine where it is and go RWD it will be awful.

Yeah have seen this thread before, and also the guy that RWD A 2.8Q coupe on drift works put it up for sale on here a while back. Only problem is the thread above is a older Quattro system and the diff lock locks both the rear and centre diff doesn't it ? Or that's what I've been told. Either way ! I put a toggle switch on the blue/white wire to the module last night, all is well. I won't be running it locked constantly ATM, but was just curious as to where it was. Thanks for the heads up. I know I will get a lot of flack for this from some, but thanks to the people that appreciate I'm just trying to give something different a go

I can assure you it would be an awful handling car, may be lots of fun, I'm not disputing that, but awful none the less.
All I can say is if you that if you convert to RWD there is no way on gods earth that you would ever follow the same car with stock 4WD. The stock car is not a great to start with, but,if you know what your doing, you can out do 2WD cars with ease but this is in spite of the Quattro being very poorly balanced with the engine in front of the wheels.
Like Error404 said, the 4WD is its saving grace, without it it does not become better, the weight is simply in the wrong place.

You said "If you leave the engine where it is and go RWD it will be awful."

It means that it won't necessarily be awful for the person doing it, everyones reference point is different. I had an XR4i back in the day that was one of the most fun cars I ever had, but it's handling was truly shocking, same goes for Capri's but they too are fun cars to drive and most people that I know who had them put ballast in the boot to counter.

Physics play their part, but by the sounds of things he just wants to have fun with it and experiment, it's not like the process is irreversible...

To be fair I was intending to purchase a spare centre diff, so that if for whatever reason I did decide to switch back, it's only a days work to slap the other diff and front shafts back in. I wouldn't do anything that can't be reversed !

If it was a S-model or something more rare, I would agree with the people saying it's a bad idea.
But you know what? I think you should go for it, it's a pretty bland car, why not do something fun with it?

And as you say, it's not alot of work restoring it.

This is my whole thought behind it really, I mean, for the condition the car is in, and the fact that I will never have the money to make it concourse condition, even if I was to leave it alone, clean it up to the best of MY abilities and keep it maintained, if I was to sell it in a years time, it's still going to only be worth betweenÂŁ500 and ÂŁ1000 in my eyes. If I cleaned it up still and done my little conversion I don't think it will depreciate the car at all ? I know a lot of people on drift works will pay money for something different. So either way, I don't stand to lose money, I won't be doing anything that will me irreversible, and it's something different ..

how about going full hog? strip and sell the interior out of it, gut a load of wiring, relocate the battery to the boot? fit a single front bucket, roll cage and replace all the door glass with perspex...

If you are priced right, you can get enough from selling redundant bits in order pay for a cheap knockabout... obviously you don't need to do all that straight away, but if your test works and you see the potential, its got to be worth considering?

I have considered it, however as I'm
Using as a daily at the moment I don't want to start anything as of yet. Potentially when the weather is better I may do a bit of stripping etc. If I can get enough spare parts together I'm planning to have a day at Lydenn next year in the novice group. Last time I went there was a b5 2.8 Quattro that was de-quattro'd, that thing was drifting just as well as all the mx5's and s13 nissans in the group. We shall see, I just don't want to get too much flack really.

You shouldn't worry so much what other people think, its your own car after all
Personally I think it would be a shame to ruin an otherwise nice, rare car. I think you'll find all the negative comments on here, including my own are purely cautionary and from people who have a bit more to offer than just an opinion, and who really are just trying to help you to understand that in the end you will end up with a really bad car that will probably be scrapped when you realise quite how woeful it is!

Well thanks for the opinion bud, I've spoke to the bloke who done the conversion before on a saloon, and he said that it was really controllable, and wasn't too bad once the suspension was stiffened a bit, and trust me ... It won't get scrapped it's going to be an on-going long term project.

Check out this guys thread on motorgeek for some inspiration

There is videos of him drifting as well, even an B3 with an NG going sideways.

Not fast or good handling, but good fun.

Its cheap enough to just trash if you want, and it you dont you can just reverse it as you say.
