Thanks for the help buddy, will have a look at the rear diff mount tonight, the jolt feels like it's coming from behind, but the noise mainly seems to be coming from the box itself ? .. If the rear diff mount had let the diff sag/move, would this have an effect on anything inside the box at all ?

Right lads.. It's getting worse, I'm nursing it everywhere, had on the ramps to get my tracking done and exhaust welded today, I couldn't find the rear diff mount ... Got a bit confused if I'm honest. I can't see anything that would cause alarm. However, the selector arm that has the UJ on was covered in ****, and I don't know how far the grub screw on the side should be wound in ? Picture below :
If driving in any gear, I come to a halt, dip the clutch and go to put it into first i get a metallic crunching sound and a jolt all the way through the car, however, if I then take it back out of first and do It again it's fine. It's really odd, it's as off I'm not fully depressing the clutch (which I am) .. Which would make me thing that it's on the way out, but I don't see that this would also cause the transmission jolt's ? Added to this I'm getting an intermittent "rotational" tapping from the rear end, only does is occasionally but gets quite loud.
I'm really starting to wonder where to start ... But as it's my daily I don't want to be ripping everything apart on a Sunday afternoon !
Any help/picture/advice/opinions etc greatly received.

Had another look underneathe as it's getting worse still .. I still can't find a mount that resembles the picture above, but the only mount I can find is this :
This is the spare I had lying about, but the one on the front of the diff tunnel casing is poggered ... Got the back wheels off the floor and as soon as the find the biting point the whole diff jolts up and slaps the underside of the car, there's about 2 inches of movement. Waiting to get my tools back and I will be swapping them over to see if it makes any difference ..

Just to update the thread, after a few months just commuting and no sideways action, I decided to bite the bullet, I purchased a brand new APIKOL rear diff mount which is anodised billet ally with poly bushes to suit. Here is a pic :
More than pleased with the build quality, and has stopped all diff movement and hast induced any vibrations !! .. Considering audi dealer wanted £146 + VAT and 034 Motorsport wanted the equivalent of £180 inc shipping from California. It was a no brainer. Better still I ordered on a Friday and it arrived Monday morning !
I was hoping to have pictures of my other exciting purchase .. However the company is waiting to have the item in stock
I've purchased a brand new set of FK high sport coilovers from FK themselves, I worked out that to achieve what I wanted in terms of ride quality/handling/lows/stiffness .. The price of the FK's was good, even better is that the FK website has a 45% sale on at the moment so I suggest some of you boys get on there !! It worked out at £360 for a set of coilovers ... Which is pretty damn good if you ask me !!
I also got a good deal on a set of cheapo 17" alloys as I was getting bored of mine and wanted a change :
Unfortunately, the new diff mount has not stopped the horrible noise, even though it's holding the diff still and solid, I'm pretty sure it's an internal diff fault.
There is no excessive play in the centre carrier, and nothing that looks out of the ordinary underneathe but the noise
Is coming from inside the diff :/
Hope to swap it for my spare at the weekend ! Will let you know how I get on and hope to post a complete transformation once all the bits I have in mind are done
Thanks

That grub screw on the linkage just retains it on the rod in the gearbox, it should just be nipped up tight, around 20nm if its an M8 screw.
The linkage is probably pretty shot anyway and new ones are not expensive, around £60 from memory - a new one will be a noticeable improvement.
Try bleeding the clutch hydraulics, as it sounds like the clutch is not disengaging correctly.
I notice you're jacking the car under the diff - bad idea. That's probably the reason yours are trashed - you've replaced one of them, what about the rest?
Some "slack" when coming on and off the power is pretty normal - it's the centre diff. As you are RWD you could take the centre diff out and weld it up, to get rid of the shunt.

My centre diff is welded it would be RWD otherwise haha !! And the car was on axle stands in the pic, was only taking the weight of the diff to fit the new mount !
The thing that doesn't make sense to me is that when changing down through the box, as smooth or as harsh as you want, there is no problem whatso ever ?
And this is the plan, hoping to replace the other two circular mounts on the mounting plate at the rear of the diff, top the spare diff up with oil, and stick it back up and see what happens !

So you went for the FK Highsport set? Good thing about the discount. I sent FK an e-mail asking for the exact differences between the High and Konigsport sets. I'll probably go for the last one.
The wheels look pretty cool, like what a lot drifters use on Jap cars. Interested to see what they will look like on the Audi.
