Or if you feeling brave get your dad to tow you to Northampton. I once towed my dad back from Banbury to London on the M40 but that was back in 1991.And my brother towed me back from Junt 13 M4 back to London a few years ago as the Astra died in the fast lane. Bit hairy but definitely doable if you have the nerve and will save you loads!

How does "correct tools" looks like? All you can do mechanically is double check the timing and particularly the state of keyways on the sprockets. That is an absolute fundamental to establish before doing any electrical tests. You do need correct tools for doing that properly though and you need a new bottom pulley bolt for peace of mind as well - dont reuse the old one as its a 'stretch' bolt.
I will check the sprockets and timing etc. first, before thinking of towing it anywhere. Have next 2 days off work, so have plenty of time to do that.Or if you feeling brave get your dad to tow you to Northampton. @hunker - check on this forum for a sticky thread on timing belt replacement - I documented all the steps and there is a special tool required to lock the crankshaft while removing the effing tight bottom bolt - you need good quality socket (ideally 3/4") and super long extension to remove it and care required to torque down again.Paul Nugent

Yeah, insurance fraud is always a good way to do it
Go through the troubleshooting like anyone else, if it doesn't work then you may need to pay some money to get it sorted.Comment

Sorry for the OT, but breakdown cover (cover, as in insurance cover) is an insurance against breaking down. By deliberately violating the terms of it, you are making a fraudulent claim.
Anyways, good luck finding the problem, it will all be worth it in the end.Comment

I disagree entirely. Fining a professional who knows anything about these cars is a job in itself, I can only think of about 4 I would trust my car with, in the whole country.janis - STOP!!! you've done what most of us on these forums do - trying to do it yourself !!!!
now, before you sell it and regret it, take some time and some money and get it to the right mechanic. these things are hellishly complex old machines and for you to get advice from one guy to the next on this forum will only drive you insane !!! i just happened to be lucky with the n75 replacement to get mine running correctly, but i think that you've got to the stage where you need professional help (for your mind too, like the rest of us!!).
get it to someone who knows these things inside out, pay the inevitable £***'s bill and be done with it. you will then enjoy your car again and won't have to admit yourself for psychiatric evalution!!
all the best,
craig
The only way to run these old bangers economically is to do it yourself, with help & advice from others. There are many people on the forum who would happily give up their time and energy to help out I am sure, if he asked for help. He would also learn a lot about his car, and probably enjoy it along the way.
Unfortuntely at this age & complexity these are not fix & forget motors and need either 5 figures spending on them to completely refresh them, or constant tinkering & hand-holding which is what most people do. Paying someone minimum £50 + VAT an hour to do that is just ludicrous. My 2cPanthero Coupé quattro 20vt

I tend to agree with Mr Error !
If you roll up to your average 'independent specialist' in a 20VT engined Audi for anything more than a general service then its probably not going to be a pleasurable experience - especially for a 'no start' situation like this one. A good auto spark with background in Bosch system would be an alternative as he would be well equipped with scopes etc, but you would need to hand-feed them schematics & commentary on what to check.Paul Nugent

Totally agree with the above. The information that you get on this forum is priceless in terms of keeping these cars running. I reckon half the S2s, S4s and S6s out there would have been scrapped by now if there wasn't for this resource.
My advice would be to take your time reading around the problem, write down the steps/tests you're going to perform and then post them on here for others to see. There are people on here who are both experts and happy to help you out

Thanks guys. As I said, I'll be taking the timing belt off tomorrow to see what's ther (and following the pdf s2central provided), before i will check the timing belt marks and see if they are still alingned, if not then it must be the timing belt. No error codes are coming up either, and when I am trying to start the engine, fuel pump relay won't turn the pump on.'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P
