if we're talking about c4 vacuum booster ...
front two bolts holding a master cylinder are horizontal
............
..o.....o..
............
bolts holding a booster on the bracket form a square
..o.....o..
............
..o.....o..
comparing A/S8 booster, it has 2 bolts holding cylinder and booster onto the bracket
positioned like this
..o........
............
........o..
I've talked with rs200 some time ago about this and he told me too, no drilling required
not sure about hydraulic booster but the bracket should be same
I'll go to take booster from my scrap A8 today/tomorrow and make swap in a week so I'll let you knowComment

didn't read the whole story, but my point is that when doing vacuum booster conversion, change the whole kit, booster+master cylinder+fluid tank.
I have went with double chamber booster from A8, together with its cylinder and reservoir. There was a gasket that had to be fabricated behind it, but I am not sure which. It was not me who was doing the conversion. Keep in mind that I have done it on my 200 20v, which may be different from urs4Attached FilesComment

here you go bro
some pictures from today's work
I forgot that I sell master cylinder few years ago
however, I found out it was A4/A6 m. cylinder since it had tank connections on top not at side, so I would have to buy a new one anyways
bracket

original vacuum brake booster

A8 vacuum booster

I've tried to place them in the position they should sit in the car
as you can see, only diagonal holes should be used to bolt the booster/cylinder
distance fits ... 102mm so does the hole
you can use original A8 bolts (don't forget to take them with you)

there is another issue
lenght of the shaft should be 230 mm for c4 and that you can't get without extending it with some kind of insert
as you see on the pic. I barely made it to 205mm with c4 fork on it

and what domas said, there might be a clearance issue between booster and the bracket
check the pic, see this "gold" bolt?
it is sticking out 2mm so bare in mind that booster won't sit on the bracket
it could get a bit shaky and you could get water inside your car
I'll grind them off and use some sealant over that white gasket

I had to stop for today 'cause of rain
more to come end of week
