Good advice folks... I am really trying not to 'eat the elephant' so to speak and I am also not pretending to build the fastest / bestest S2 ever here either - I am enough of a realist about that. Must be old age giving me the negative outlook regards the mountain of work to get from where things sit now to where it has a caged, watertight shell, adjustable coilovers, decent brakes and ~RS2 power.

True there are some bits I can sell to save space (hate to chuck away anything that can be re-used as everything is so rare now), but I should really invest in a small local storage unit as well just to create breathing room in my stupid domestic garage.

Feeling slightly more positive today so lets see.

You need to be realistic about what you can do in a period of time that means you don't lose interest. With my urq project things have got out of control. I started it almost 10 years ago but really got stuck in a year ago. I have spent circa 30 k and huge amount of time in the last year. My car won't win any shows as it's not shiny enough, won't be the fastest, or the best handling but it's what I want. If I was you I would get the shell done by someone else. While that's happening build an engine. Then combine the two and fit suspension. Done. Just my opinion...

I already have 'a man' lined up for the cage work - recommended by another local forum fanatic - as soon as I get everything stripped and ship shape it can be trailered up to him via chassis cradles or whatever. He can take as long as he likes doing the cage - while I get the running gear and engine sorted. Easy to see these things being a shocking money pit but I have no aspirations (or asbestos underwear) for the thought of a 500bhp monster like yours so I hope to get out of jail for half that spend.

So I got the front left corner removed today. No dramas as I had loosened all the horrible stuff before after a good soak in penetrating oil.

To my surprise, both the track rod end and ABS sensor came out without a fight.

Some pics attached. Hopefully the other side will be as simple. Image1467757656.585079.jpgImage1467757668.800655.jpgImage1467757677.707289.jpgImage1467757700.649271.jpgImage1467757714.027222.jpg

The standard discs are in pretty good condition beyond the surface rust. Will examine and measure tomorrow - they might be of use to someone else running OE brakes. Most components at the front have seen a lick of hammerite at some point which has prevented things getting too horrible looking - but it's pretty gnarly. Nothing the sand blaster cannot remedy.

Closer inspection deffo required but I think the hub carriers will restore ok with help of the sand blaster to reduce the tedium.

I am more worried for the struts as I gather that KW are not always able to work from OE items if they are deemed not to be suitable.

looking at your pictures most of that will just wire brush off or get a sanding disc for a grinder and go to town on it. the bolt for the heatshield I think it is in the picture is the only thing that might round off when you try remove it everything else it looks like you've removed easily.

Out with front right corner today. No drama except the ABS sensor didn't get the "be nice" memo and decided to be rusted solid.

Cold chiseled off the head and punched the rest thru. Annoying but fairly well expected given the age.

I have one spare so that's not cost me anything extra. IMG_2670.JPGIMG_2675.JPGIMG_2676.JPG

Then attention turned to the gearbox.

Disconnected the hydraulic line at the joint where the solid line meets the flexi pipe into the slave cylinder.

Then removed the gear linkage right underneath the gearstick.

Had a look to confirm only other attached was the Procon Ten cables and hooked up a sling with the crane to lower it complete with subframe.

I forgot how heavy the rear of the box was and needed a trolley jack to stabilise things.

Took a few whacks with a mallet to separate the propshaft - I had already punch marked the alignment of that so it should remain balanced on rebuild. IMG_2677.JPGIMG_2683.JPGIMG_2685.JPG

With the gearbox partially out I removed the cable bracket and then proceeded to unbolt from the subframe so it was easier to wrangle into the garage.
