Maintenance day at the Simmonds garage

Went down to Kit's yesterday as he carried out some of the projects on his RS2 refresh list so I took a few pictures:

Here is the rear off-side hub/brake caliper:

Kit is now using fire as a tool, specifically a turbo-flame soldering tool. I bring in my dog Holly to supervise and ensure safety is maintained at all times:

Whilst some of this was going on Kit set me to work on rejuvenating his sacrificial cat protection brackets which had been used as jacking points and were all bent with rough edges, I failed to take a before shot but here they are now a bit straighter. For doing this Kit has given me 50% ownership of the car:

Spent yesterday cleaning Kit's Brakes which were quite grubby:

Nice one for posting all the photo's mate, I'm terrible at remembering to take any myself.

In summery the plan of action here is a full brake service, and I mean full! Fit a pair of new track rod ends/bottom ball joints as well as drop links and whilst the car is off the road over the pit tackle the joyous task of changing the fuel filter.

Oh yeah and I've fitted a better replacement NS damper along OE top mount's/mount savers and better bump stops both sides. I'm going to be having the original springs from Charlie's Mental Wheels project at some point so for now the brake's take priority.

The rear callipers desperately need refurbishing so their going to be off to Bigg Red in Worcester most like along with the fronts as if I have them done now they should come up really well.

Front disk's are going to be skimmed by the same mate the did my flywheel, their hardly worn just the inside faces are a bit grotty. New Mintex pads have been ordered.

The rear discs and pads are like new as are the handbrake shoes and mechanism so the that'll be serviced and everything cleaned and reused.

I dropped the tank to get better access to the filter as well as de-rust and Por15 the retaining straps.....

I've all but given up trying to undo the 5m head Allen bolt that retains the filter, I can't stop the nut on the other side from turning given the poor access. Though I'm going to have one more shot at it before I admit defeat and cut through the bolt with hack saw blade. As far as I can see it looks like the original filter..

I have a new genuine Audi item waiting on the shelf where it's been sat for the past year, knowing it was going to be a sod I've been putting the job off. I'm also going to remove the fuel pump and clean the strainer out for good measure.

After the fumes we breathed in yesterday I was struggling to do anything more technical than operate an Allen key in a confined space and swear a lot.

Forgot to add I need to make up a couple of new hard-lines for the brakes, the N/S/F strut to calliper pipe wouldn't free up even after lots of heat and mole grips so it got twisted. The O/S/R calliper feed pipe snapped as soon as I moved the spanner, the wall was paper thin in place's so I'm glad I found it, the other side has already been replaced and didn't cause any problems.

Oh yeah and I'm going to clean and Waxoil the fuel lines, their currently pretty dam good and it would be nice to keep them that way.
