the car looked pretty cool too
That would be Frank Shields Coupe GT.

Couldn't have been Formel E box, as they were used in the Audi 80, the 4 cylinder bellhousing would not marry up to a 5 cylinder.

the gearbox was from my audi 80 js engined formel e cos i swapped him for his coupe box car had the little eco gauge the button on the wiper stalk that stopped it in traffic and you could restart it by pressing by pressing both the accellerator and clutch together it gave 25mph per 1000rpm in top gear

Completely different blocks, more than just an extra cylinder. Early gearboxes were not interchangeable between 4 and 5 cylinder, untill the arrival of the type 89 cars in 1987, these boxes were only interchangeable because they had multi bolt fitment.

4 and 5 cylinder blocks the same, huh?

                        1) 5 cyl has 8 bolt flywheel, 4 cyl has 6 bolt flywheel
                        2) 5 cyl has cam driven dizzy, 4 cyl has intermediate shaft driven dizzy
                        3) 5 cyl lacks intermediate shaft, 4 cyl has intermediate shaft
                        4) 5 cyl has crank driven oil pump, 4 cyl has intermediate shaft driven oil pump
                        5) 5 cyl has cam belt driven water pump, 4 cyl has vee belt driven water pump
                        6) 5 cyl 20V has cams chain linked at front end, 4 cyl 16V has cams linked at rear end
                        7) 5 cyl has lower mounted alternator, 4 cyl has top mounted alternator
                        8) 5 cyl has hoop for starter motor, 4 cyl has no hoop for starter motor
                        9) 5 cyl has 2 upper bellhousing bolts, 4 cyl has 1 upper bellhousing bolt

There are other differences between 4 & 5 cylinder engines that will take up quite a lot of space, so we won't go there.

If any 2 VAG engines are the same, barring an extra cylinder, it's actually the inline 5 and the inline 6 in the old VW LT. The straight 6 is a development of the IL5, identical down to the cast marks and webbing on the block. The engine mounts are in exactly the same place, the PAS pumps are in exactly the same place, the oil pumps are interchangeable, the cam belts are interchangeable, the water pumps are interchangeable, the engine breathers are interchangeable, the rocker covers are the same design, apart from the length, the cam belt covers are interchangeable, in fact, everything not affected by the length is interchangeable between the 5 and 6 cylinder.
Both engines used the well proven 016 tranny.

The only thing the 4 and 5 cylinder engines have in common is the dimensions of bore / stroke, conrods, spacing between cylinder ports (inlet and exhaust) and of course, the trade mark right inclined slant to the engine.

It almost seems a shame Audi never developed a petrol turbo version of the straight 6, or even a multivalve cylinder head, making it a nice 24V unit. Add 2 turbos on each 3 branch exhaust manifold, we have a configuration pretty similar to a Skyline. Shame it's so bloody long...

So Pastures, we learn a new thing every day, insulting me for making a contribution you don't agree with certainly isn't clever.

My apologies Baldy, I remember Audi had 2 5 cylinder models in the type 85 saloon - 80 quattro (2,144 cc KK) and 80 CD (1,921cc WN and 1,994cc JS). The CD had the 4 + E tranny, though it was not actually badged as Formel E. (Formel E was a model in its own right with econometer, as in early WN - engined Coupe GT-5S).
