    Hi!
Before you blame anything electrical, I would check to see whether the timing pin on the flywheel has sheared off. Although the documentation says that the car will continue to run if this happens once the car is started, in the real world I know of at least two case where the pin went and the car stopped.
You will have to get under the car and remove the starter motor. If you remove the spark plugs it will be easier to rotate the engine. Basically you need to turn the engine over. You are looking for a steel pin protruding from the flywheel just below the ring gear. If you see a nice shining spot of metal, then your pin has gone!
Steve H had this a while back and posted a nice shot. I'll try and find that in a mo.
That loose connector looks like its the hall sender connector on the distributor.

Hope this gives you an idea what I'm on about!

cheers mate. Scarily enough that gives me a bit more to consider. But if i'm better educated it can only be a good thing.
The spark said there was no current getting to the hall sender so I assume he had it unplugged to test it. I might just let him get the ECU tested for peace of mind since he has it with him anyway.
        thanks

That 'random connector in mid air' could be for the hall-effect sensor thats inside the dissy. Certainly correct looking plug and number of pins but I haven't checked wire colours yet.

Feel your hands round the dissy for an electrical connector that looks a bit lonely !

Just looked at the schematics and I'm pretty sure that connector is hall-effect sensor wiring. Schematic says the three wires are red/black, green and brown/yellow which looks to me like what you have !

Look here for some electrical info on 3B - not exhaustive like...

You appear to have Fuse S24 missing - so guessing you aint got much boost happening there as the ECU aint controlling it... Suggest you get yourself another auto electrician if I can tell you this over the frickin internet !!!!!!!!!!

I think you're right mate. I'll get the ECU back off him, check all the fuses, reconnect the hall sensor and see where I am. I assume i'll be where I was to start with since he'll have unplugged the sensor to run whatever tests he was doing but I'd like to send you the ECU for a once over if that's ok? (and i'll square you up as needed).
Thanks for the links by the way. I'll go over that lot while I have my lunch.
                cheers

I don't reckon I'll need to look over the ECU... Good bet that you plug that connector in, get a 10A fuse for S24 and you'll have a fire breathing 3B again !

Paul, Previous owner tells me the immobilizer packed in when he had it so he had someone remove it. the person turned out to be a cowboy so he suggests maybe i've knocked something under the dash?
Just before the car died I noticed the panel/shelf under the steering column was sagging a bit so i took it off to tidy the wiring up a bit. (messy) Is it possible i've hit one of the relays that sits up under the far right corner of the dash near the ignition barrel or something along these lines? The fact that I did this and washed the car right before the ****** died has me very suspicious that the hall sensor or ECU didn't just suddenly die.

fantastic info on your site mate. i'm going to grab an LED on the way home and get some blinked codes. surely that would be a sound way to work this out?
or I could get myself a nice corsa and a headboard to stick onto the back, set it off nicely with some neons and a set of 6 by 9s, bit of cheesy dance choons and get myself down to a carpark.

fourcircle - I've been meaning to reply to your original post on selling that red 3B for a while now. I often pass your red 16V coup (very nice too), and noticed the broken 3B next to it at the weekend there. I've a '92 3B.. emerald green .. what other colour is there eh it would appear? Anyway.. I won't be over your way until next weekend, but if your still stuck by then I'll gladly swap over ECU's to see if you get a spark to rule that out. I had a similar problem where It would intermittently cut-out, and then eventually no spark. VAG-COM threw out checksum errors, and also a faulty hall-sender code within the dizzy. Turns out it was a facked ECU.. they were like hen's teeth at the time - eventually I got one (paid through the nose), but it's been fine ever since.

All it takes is a minute dry joint or faulty surface mount component and the ECU is jiggered. Cheers the now.

Sorry, I just wanted to use this smiley..

Good luck with blink codes on the 16V... I'm sure I have heard about difficulties on that engine with blink codes and VAG-COM... Can't remember details though... I don't get much hands on with the 16V engine.
