Hi!
Before you blame anything electrical, I would check to see whether the timing pin on the flywheel has sheared off. Although the documentation says that the car will continue to run if this happens once the car is started, in the real world I know of at least two case where the pin went and the car stopped.
You will have to get under the car and remove the starter motor. If you remove the spark plugs it will be easier to rotate the engine. Basically you need to turn the engine over. You are looking for a steel pin protruding from the flywheel just below the ring gear. If you see a nice shining spot of metal, then your pin has gone!
Steve H had this a while back and posted a nice shot. I'll try and find that in a mo.
That loose connector looks like its the hall sender connector on the distributor.
Hope this gives you an idea what I'm on about!

Anyway.. I won't be over your way until next weekend, but if your still stuck by then I'll gladly swap over ECU's to see if you get a spark to rule that out. I had a similar problem where It would intermittently cut-out, and then eventually no spark. VAG-COM threw out checksum errors, and also a faulty hall-sender code within the dizzy. Turns out it was a facked ECU.. they were like hen's teeth at the time - eventually I got one (paid through the nose), but it's been fine ever since.
