Can we just use a stock knock sensor, in stock position, through amp to head phones? I got a little pre amp, but have been too lazy to try this out. But if its known to work then I will deffo do it.

using a stock sensor is not using the one the engine uses. if the engine one is bad you may see lots of lovely knock on graph or hear it but does that stop the engine blowing..no

checking condition and torque of factory sensors is handy. as is hitting one with a spanner lightly to simulate retard knock for retard. can be done at idle.

I must get the soldering iron out. If I tap in at the ecu, the stock knock cables are shielded right?

it works great. and yes, the laptop becomes the amp.

                        spotting knock is easy.

                        no knock:

Defo read as much as possible first. Jumping straight in and fiddleing with things you dont understand properly melts pistons (the voice of costly experience).

You will probably find one of the biggest drawbacks is not having a rolling road. The open road is okay for getting it running pretty well but I think it will be difficult to map it on to get the most out of my car so will probably pay someone else for the fine tune.

I prefer open road to be honest.

I don't drive on a rolling road. I prefer to either drive and log or be the passenger and tweak as I go.

ive found that air, temp and other factors such as hills and driving style affect certain parts. granted rollers allow you to set rpm etc.

leaning to know what is needed is prior knowledge plus experience. first mapping session I ever did burned a hole in a Subaru ported header. good job it was weak. that was on map apparently written at the time by the best Subaru tuner around. timing was so low egts went up faster than fuel prices at the moment

Stock ECU will not retard on idle no matter how hard you hammer it. There's a MAP threshold from which knock control is activated. Just thought i'd throw this in.
Probably not too relevant to what you said.

Yeah, you got it. Push the mic against the metal clip, then cover the back and everything else around it fully with JB weld or a similar "liquid metal" compound.
After this the mic will only pick up vibrations transmitted through the metal clip and no outside noise. Don't try to use glue for this, as glue will melt.

Cementing the mic to the clip is very important, otherwise it's like just putting a mic dangling in your engine bay, which is completely useless.
