The problems with 4/6/8 pots are:
      1 or more sticking pistons,
corroded or bent backing plates-they need to be spot on otherwise they squeal like a bitch when hot( so all the time then!!),
      lack of grease/lube,
      glazed pads( not bedded in),
drilled discs can make a hell of a noise if the holes are filed up with brake dust,
      I have used the audi "lubricating paste" p/no : 111 999 319
and that is very good as is this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CeraTec-Brake-...QQcmdZViewItem
one of my biker mates swears by it on his 'busa.
If the calipers are grubby they need to be taken off cleaned with loads of brake cleaner, all the crap needs to be off before the grease can be applied otherwise it will only work for a while then be back to what it was like before- a pain i know but so is the noise-and everyone that glares at you when you press the pedal at 2 mph and it sounds like you have just slammed on!!

REally can't imagine a sticky caliper as they were only rebuilt a little ago.... also they were well greased up before they went on first time......

MIne have started again. Newish big red OEM kit ( so not usual gavanisation build up) recent pad change with new backing plates. However the cretin doing the job failed to stick one of the pads (the adhesive protective paper exuded from the caliper over the following two weeks)
I am certain you need to stick the pads to the plate and if this is not done or fails with time you get noise at some stage.

I think you can add 'pads fixed to backing plate with adhesive' Its expected to last as the RS2 service manual tells you to use a 'spatula' to prise them off plate on removal.

i now have a noise from my 996 brakes but it is not a squeal like noise but a clap or knock when relicing the pedal. when stationary it doesn't do it but only when moving it this just down to not having the anti squeal shims ?

Going to be changing front pads this weekend on Boxster S calipers. I've been trying to search for what to use to stick the old dampening plates to the new pads. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've seen various posts about leaving everything dry or using grease or plastilube. I'm unsure whether these posts refer to the boxster s calipers with the plates which have the bits that sit inside the pistons.
                  Any advice gratefully received.

                  Thanks

                  Alistair

I have exactly the same problem with my 996's it's like a humming noise, it goes away when you either turn the steering wheel and touch the brakes and also does it when you drive straight so it can't be a wheel bearing.

I'm going to give the pads a good clean and try some of this grease/lube to see if this helps.

One thing i have noticed if i drive fast no noise but if i drive slowly very noisey

I am yet another person to be added to this list. My car has been doing this more and more sicne I fitted the 996's.

                        So far I have

                        - Ensured at minimum of 2mm clearance between pins and disc face
                        - lots of copperslip on first fit
                        - Plastilube once I realised that the copperslip wasn't ideal

Now I just don't know what to do. The noise is really bad once the brakes are warm. It's worse when turning left slightly. If I dab the brakes even a touch, it goes away. The whole car is starting to resonate now.
If anyone has anymore tips then i would really appreciate it.

The brakes work brilliantly, better than I could have ever expected. The car stops quickly and in a straight line and there is absolutely no vibration during braking.

                            Really?
It has been suggested but I have always ruled it out due to it being such a coincidence that the noises started with the brake upgrade. I'll have a look on here as wheel bearings are not something that i have done before.

Original callipers are floating design with fixed disc, the solidl held 996s with solid discs leave little adjustment in the system. You could try tightening the callipers with the brakes applied so that they centre properly.

I replace the front wheel bearings at the beginning of last year due to the ringing noise from the passenger disc and the problem went away.

I took my discs and calipers off about 6 weeks ago (996's and textars) the pads were held solid in the calipers by brake dust buildup and one of the pistons was stuck.

new pads ds2500's and new discs, removed the squeal shims completely.
Ground about 2-3 mm off of the caliper carrier mounting bolts as they looked way too close to the back of the discs, ground about 2mm off all the pad locating pins on the calipers. again, seemed way too close for my liking (prob. 1-2mm clearance).

So far so good. not sure what one of these problem was the true cause but now when i'm cleaning my car i squirt wheel cleaner on and in the caliper and jet wash it out to stop any build up again.

                                hope this helps.
