    Brake noises again

Argh, why does this keep happening

After spending so much time and effort in February getting my sprung plates replaced, cleaning out the corrosion etc from my RS2 calipers and getting yet another set of pads, I thought my days of the dreaded brake vibration/ resonation/ noise woes were over.

Oh no. On Saturday, after about 1 hour's driving on the M-way, the noise starts again. It almost sounds like a wheel bearing or something, but as soon as you apply even the lightest touch on the brake pedal, it goes away. Sometimes it goes away by itself, but comes back again. It sometimes goes away when you turn in to a left hand bend, and it seems to get worse turning in to a right hand bend.

I pulled out all 4 pads yesterday, gave the brakes a good clear out (there was lots of dust build up) and filed off a small amount on the pad backing plate as before. Driving back home, it started up after about 10 mins and is now worse than before.

On braking, the brakes are squealing so loudly that pedestrians are turning to look. On heavier braking, the squealing is so bad it sets off the ABS. If you brake really heavily, it works through all of that, but blimey it's awful.

Just what is going on here? I'm seriously considering chucking these calipers and getting something else at the moment as this is doing my head in. Any suggestions?

I've still got the anti-squeal shims in, and I was running the pads dry (no copaslip) as Brembo recommend.

I've had this strangely enough on the 996's. I tried running them dry as Porsche suggest but they still squealed like ******y, as in travelling along the motorway and the squealing comes and goes and also during light braking.
So tried copperslip on the back of the antisqueal thingies and where the pad rests against the steel pins. This stopped it for a while, but then it returned again. The copperslip had gone all hard
Local specialist said use "Plastilube" which I'd never even heard of, but is apparently used by VW/Audi dealers on their braking systems. Just by chance whilst browsing the bay of fleas I spotted some of this stuff and bought it for the really great price of 10p
It's like a very very thick grease, hard to explain but have had the pads out, cleaned everything up and applied to all the pad contact points and so far so good
Link here for a photo of the stuff I got from fleabay.
Maybe a friendly local dealer will be able to get some, or even Marty at Vagparts??

The sheer noise of the squeal, and the vibrations it's sending through the car though, blimey it's awful. I just hope it's not causing any mechanical harm. I'll give it all a try though - will try removing the antisqueal shims too as they don't seem to be doing much!

      Anyone got any plastilube?!

Ive been having a similar problem with my AP's and have had a new set of DS2500's fitted to the car under warranty because one side chunks had come off of the pad. Im onto AP about this at the moment to see how it can be sorted and I had used the anti squeal spray like Jas has mentioned :S

So this is a common problem then - brake noise even when not braking, and risable squeal issues. This is not great.

This Plastilube stuff is made in germany by a company called "Henkel Teroson"

Done a bit of googling and found it can be bought from Audi dealers for around £4 per 35ml tube. I was really suprised at the amount of search results that came up on google raving about the stuff for OEM and aftermarket Brembo setups for Audi's

Sorry for the link to the TT forum (google search, honest ) but it has a bigger picture of this stuff, and he quotes it can be got from the dealers.

VAGParts don't sell it, I just got through to them.
Got the Audi part number though:

I had the same probs on my RS2, I used Silkolene Pro RG2 grease (mega hi temp grease with copper flakes in it) & no problems since.
Most decent motorbike shops will sell it, around £5 for a large tub, often used to grease fork seals & sliders, its also waterproof.

I all so had this squeal problem on my 996's a while back, went to slap some copper grease on and noticed that there were afew places where the back plate/disc sheild
were very close to the disc, not touching but very close in some places.
So i went around bending and tweeking the back plate/disc sheild until i had 2mm of
clearance between it and the back of the brake disc.
I have had NO squeal since i did this

When i first jacked the car up and span the wheels there was no rubbing noise to
indicate there was contact between disc and sheild, so i can only guess that when the disc's were getting hot and expanding they were touching the back plate/disc sheild in places. Hope this helps a few?
