I have so much meat left on the pads and the DS2500s are superb in my opinion...

There must be an answer somewhere.

I agree, the DS2500 are brilliant pads - apart from the squealing which might not just be down the the pads.

Well I guess that answers my next question!

Is there an affordable brake set up which would perform as well as or better than my current set up?

Mine have started doing this again, it seems to be worst when the brakes are new, this could be due to the disc being 2mm thicker than the calliper is designed for. On cheaper pads you could sand the pad down a little before fitting, on expensive pads you just have to put up with it. On the motorway you can cover the brake pedal and it goes away, or, just drive on a wet day where the natural lubrication of the rain seems to sort it for you!

I've been looking into this for some time since my Avant occassional does the same thing

Came up with what the Yanks use http://www.crcindustries.com/auto/co...x?PN=05016&S=Y

Need to find a U.K supplier to test it out but I believe you can't use shims with it

Just thought I'd bump this back up to the top...

The brakes were making a racket again so I stripped them down and gave them a thorough cleaning. All was well and good until I'd covered about 50 miles and although not as bad as last time, it's still doing my head in!

When I stripped the brakes down I noticed that the top piston on the passenger caliper was not returning fully. I tried my hardest to get it to sit flush with the tools available but it wasn't having any of it. I've a feeling that this probably means that the top of inner brake pad is probably gently touching the disc when brakes get hot.

Anyway, I've really had enough of it. Did anybody ever find a decent (and cheap!) brake set-up that bolts straight on?

Hey Rob...having the same issue but not had a chance yet to pull a wheel off and see. I figured they were dragging because i know my pad dampers are in poor condition or i hadn't used (enough) slip. there aren't any scoring marks etc so wil do as you have and clean up and try again. are you sure the pad pins are clear of the disc when they are hot? I'm using the zimmerman discs this time out rather than the brembo ones and I am wondering if they have more thermal expansion than the brembos as i ran them for 6yrs and 30k miles including track days etc without issue.

                      Hi David.

I'm fairly certain the pad pins are clearing the disc but I've not checked when they are hot. Must be worth a check so I'll look into that.

As for the discs, I'm currently running machined A8 discs which seem to work a treat. Ordinarily, once I clean the brakes up I have no problems with the brakes for some time but only getting 50 miles out of them is abit of a piss take.

I do think that this piston is causing some troubles so perhaps it's time to have the brakes fully refurbished.

This is often caused by installing new pads on worn or slightly worn rotors. Buying new rotors or turning the same rotors would make a smooth surface for the new pads to rub against. Any surface that is less than smooth will cause some grinding for a few days or maybe longer. It also shortens the life of your new pads.

I've got used to the squealling and almost kind of like it now... ..
sometimes I'll pull up to a red light and try to get them to squeal as loud as possible to see if I can get everyone in a cafe to look around :mischeif:.. and the Mrs always knows I'm home when I'm still down the road...

Although when the DS2500's wear out I'll be trying another brand of pad..
