Erik , your break down of the Porsche numbering system is correct.

1st three digits refer to which vehicle they were first assigned to.
2nd three digits refer to braking system (wither front or rear)
3rd three digits refer to left or right side
10th and 11th digits tell you the colour or revision

so, the second pair you list are a pair from a 996 Carrera. The 01 states they are black and therefore from a Carrera 2.

The other 'pair' you list above are both left hand calipers (probably in silver -C4) but one is from a pre '99 car and one is from a '00 on car.
    Definately NOT a pair!

Thanks allistair for explaining, do you know where I can find the color codes. I think martinjs could be right and that 21/22 (?why different numers)stands for silver?

According to my Porsche parts CD, they were 21 until chassis no 99YS6 02736
(roughly 1999) and then 22 from then on.

Oh and the other pair of numbers you gave do indeed correspond to 4-pot 996 Carrera Turbo front calipers (the same parts as used on early GT3s)

The Porsche parts catalogue pages showing these brakes are on the forum somewhere..............

So the best thing to do is to get the 22 pair?

How about the price, is this any good for second hand (havent got a picture)

Well, they'll be newer than a 21 pair, but other than that, I've no idea what (if any)the difference would be. Perhaps they used a shinier lacquer from 2000 on. The black ones never got re-released in 2000

Well here in the UK, I paid £250 for a good pair of black ones, but I think the normal price is about £300 - so 440 euros would be spot on (with our current exchange rate!)

I ordered the brakes but no response on my emails, fax and phonenumber I rang. I contacted Bry he has some brakes left, so I am considering buying these. But I also found someone in Germany which sell his boxster(986) front calipers against a good price. But I am not sure if they are Boxster S calipers. They are silver, does someone know if the S calipers are silver and the normall boxster calipers have other colours ?

                        edit:

The RS2 brackets are included, or will these also fit on normall boxster calipers.

                        thanks,

                        Erik

the part numbers must be correct
986 is a boxster caliper not a boxster 's' all 996 calipers start with 996.
They will fit with a narrow width disc which defeats the object of upgrading the brakes!

                            thanks bry

but do you know if the S caliper was silver and maybe the normal caliper is black/red? We know that the 996 caliper was silver for some years.

And what about the rs2 bracket, does this one also fit the normal boxster caliper?

S caliper is red, I know that because everyone wants red calipers and they are the only 996 standard caliper which is red.
The RS2 bracket will fit the boxster,996 caliper, big red and the little red.

Got a call friday from the company where I ordered the brakes. After ordering I couldnt get any contact not by mail, phone or fax. But last friday they where delivered, so now I have 2 pairs of porsche front brakes. If someone is interested in a pair of porsche 996 front calipers in silver. Please contact me. I paid 440 euro for them. They have some scratches, I would consider to powder coat them, but technically in good condition (as far I can see). I ask 425 euro for them. If someone is interested please contact me.
