Problem with 996 conversion, pads are to big

    Hi,

I was doint my 996 conversion, however I seem to have a small problem.

The 996 pads are to big, if install the with the damping plates, the will touch the disc. So does anybody have a suggestion to what the **** I do?

I bought the 996 textar pads (996.352.94903) that are mentioned in various threads, but do I need to grind some of the pad away or what?

Or can I simple take the car of a drive and drive a wat the accesive pad?

Is there a different pad that I can get instead?

I stuck the pads in the milling machine and took ~1mm off IIRC.

the 996 callipers are designed for 28mm discs, so you can see how tight it is with dampening plates and 30mm

As Stu said, shave a bit off the pads and youll be sorted!

Yeah I feared that I had to remove some of the surface of the pad.

I got the to fit there but it is really thight, so I guess the question is if I can just drive with them and let them touch the disc or should I remove the and take some of the surface off?

Mine were REALLY close, and i didnt have dampening plates!

There is no mechanism in the brakes to pull the pad back when its finished braking, other than the rotating mass of the disc, so if they fit in id say drive with them and the bedding in procedure for them should take enough off the surface to stop them squealing.

That is the 996 caliper, Zimmerman 323x30 disc, RS2 carriers and 996 textar pads.

Any suggestions to wheter I should take some of the pads off or just drive it away?

The pads should go further back, how hard did you try?
I have never taken any material off the front of pads to get them clear with that disc caliper combo.

The pads cant go further back Bry, pistons are as far in as they can.

I got the pads on but they touch the rim (se picture above). I did not have to use much force to get it on, but perhaps some surface removal of the caliper would be wise?

But I must admit that it seems logic, I mean these textar pads from porsche are normally used with a 28 mm thick disc.

Ohh yeah I did use the damping plates as well, I guess that without them the would fit without a problem.

Have you connected the brake pipe?
With the brake pipe removed you can push the pistons back if you put the pads in one at a time and use your hands / fingers to squeeze them. You have to put some effort in.
                          Or I have strong hands

WARNING - This will cause brake fluid to shoot out of the caliper from the brake pipe connection. This is not very nice when the connection is pointing at your face or your car.

Nope the brake pipe is not connected.

But i got the pads in there Bry, however they touch the disc. This is my main concern, should I grind some of the surface away or just let the pads touch the disc and then brake in the pads and hope I can remove enough material?

But just so I understand, when you look at the picture, you think that the pistons should be pushed further in? Then I presume when I bleed the system, and mount the brake line, then the pistons will be pushed back as much as the can, right?
