SO.... Is there a way to keep my 16 inch Avus wheels, and get a big improvement in braking, but NOT get into milling/grinding discs and /or calipers ?? Does using the Porscheb 996 calipers definately involve machining parts to adapt them?

    Please?
996 monos with machined RS2 calliper carriers and 314 discs will definitely fit under 16" Avus wheels, I ran this setup for 2 years.

The 996 callipers require the pins filing/grinding/machining by 1-2mm / side as the A8 disc is wider than the 996/986 discs by 2mm IIRC. This is a very simple thing to do, can be done by a machine shop, no sweat.

Sonic posted the machining for 323 calipers, take 4.5mm off the caliper mounting face and you have a suitable 314mm solution

Any machineshop worth their salt will be able to face machine the carriers.

You need to grind a little off the caliper carrier bolts too, this can be done when fitted and is required as the machining of the carriers lets the bolts protrude through a little and they can touch the inner edge of the disc.

Overall it's a simple solution that works well and is very cost effective, there are other custom solutions but you're looking at double the money and still having to get custom parts made.

I got my setup off Bry, not sure he's doing the kits anymore but might be worth pleading with him to sort you a set of carriers

Thats all understood Andy - this thread is trying again to see what (if anything) can be done with pure bolt-on bits to avoid hassle/cost of getting stuff machined (which I agree isn't a big deal - especially if its just a one-off thing on the carriers or calipers to accomodate off the shelf disc).

OK, just clearing up any remaining confusion as I've done this and it worked fine with the wheels specified For the small amount of machining that's required, I would go down this route again. The two part 968/RS2 callipers are not as reliable due to corrosion issues, there's also the larger 993TT callipers but they suffer the same fate (2 part). Willwood, AP and a few others will do you a kit but it'll be £1k+ and functionally the same as the 996s. There was a bolt on kit from IMSATim I think, whatever company that was but again, £1k.

Yeh sorry for the vaugeness stnd 16" avus, no spacers. Reckon I've got 3mm radial clearance and probably 5mm clearance from the inside of the wheel to the front face of the caliper - when it stops raining I'll go take a pic ...

I had no (mounting) problem fitting the A8 discs, RS2 (968cs) calipers on RS2 brackets with (brake)spacers under a 16"Avus wheel. No wheel spacers used.
Spacers were used to get correct height alignment between disc & caliper.
            No machining done anywhere.

Just had the already mentioned corrosion issue that has been solved overhauling the calipers

It does not help with clearance on the inner diameter of the wheels against the calipers... AFAIK....

But I stand to be corrected....

If I have time tomorrow I will try and put one of my old Avus 16's alloys on with my 996-bambridge-323mm conversion...

Yes it does help. The Avus wheels are tapered, if you use a 10mm spacer you gain about 3mm radial clearance, more like 4-5mm with a 15mm spacer. There is no need for more axial clearance as per your top pic.

Some great info here for peeps wanting to upgrade with Avus 16's...

I guess if enough people ask Kev Aka Bambridge will do a mount that is 4.5mm smaller... Just ask him the question...

Paul here is a drawing I did for Kev when I was doing my upgrade... I measured both the standard 996 caliper and also the Big Reds...

A bit rough but you get the idea...

This is Kev's std 996 bracket fitted...

Sorry I read your post a couple times and still didn't quite catch it. You say that you are running "machined" caliper carriers, however I didn't see anywhere in your post how your carriers were machined. Which side was machined and how much?

I'm going to search for Sonic's post about machining the caliper...

I don't have the exact specs on my calliper carriers, however, Sonic had some made for a 323mm setup...

Ballacks, stuffed if I can find the tread, will keep looking...

way i look at this is.

                      1. they must stop.
                      2. they must weight as little as possible.
                      3. cheap if possible

im not sure that a full bolt-on solution is possible or good enough. the poorer the driver the better the stoppers need to be.

i went 6 pot over 4 pot because i got them at good deal. and they work better.
i went 993 tt because i prefer a 2 piece solution for weight and as thats what i had previously on my corrado.

with the bambridge brackets and bells the solution will bolt on. cant get any easier than that. save turning discs etc. im not into shaving parts that are under pressure like calipers. they were made that way for a reason.

i went red stuff for pads as im not made of money.

all performs very well....under an 18" rim.

i dont do budget anti ditch/rear-end/corner over run protection.

                      only my opinion

This was for Sonic's setup using the Seat Calliper Carriers.

For use with stock wheels it seems that the 4.5mm might not be enough, GNutz used 5.5mm and Martinjs has posted dims for edges from the hole centres, see his post in the link.

You say "spaced accordingly" ... in what way spaced? (My lack of mechanical knowledge a problem. )

Is this the ultimate BOLT-ON upgrade ?

Where do the RS2 calipers stand in terms of stopping power compared to Porsche 996 or Porsche Big Reds...?? And anyone got ideas of costs?

How do the Seat brackets measure upto the RS2 brackets? anyone know??

Kev (Aka Bambridge) is on about coming over to measure my cars set up with the 996 calipers and bracket and we will try it with one of my old 16" avus alloys and he might be able to machine another bracket just for this set up...
