Ferodo DS2500, a small number of grooves if you track your beastie (otherwise stick with plain) and 'Castrol Super Response DOT4' for a tenner from Halfords. This is hard to beat this fluid without spending 5 times more on the stuff. Castrol SRF if you have deeper pockets in the fluid department. Be careful with some fluids and check compatibility. I wouldn't bother with DOT5.1 and do not use DOT5. A higher DOT number doesn't mean better, it just means that it complies with a different standard and is sometimes of lower performance.

I too am a victim of marketing which is why I always go for the 3 for 2 offers in the supermarket for stuff I wouldn't have normally bought. I guess that is more of being a 'sucker for bargains'.

Also don't forget that you will rarely get impartial advice from a tuning firm. They are a commercial business, they want to pedal their wares preferentially over whatever else is on the market. Many lie through their teeth too get you to buy stuff too...I've seen plenty of that. I have had one techician try to contradict an entire profession in an attempt to get a sale. Buyer beware. An educated buyer is rarely duped or disappoined.

Ferrodo DS2500 are good pads - I have them - they don't outgas and were only £80 from Graham Goode. Initial cold bite is not too great but still better than other I have tried.
In another thread I was complaining of the car pulling badly to the right when braking from speed. Having stripped down the brakes, I've discovered that the EBC Reds on my front calipers, which have only been on since June, have split away from the metal backing and are flopping around in the caliper. No bloody wonder the car isn't pulling up straight.

I'm off to find some Ferrodo GS2500s - I simply refuse to skimp on brakes: like tyres, they're the only things that keep you safe, and quality is everything.

Anyone know a good supplier for the Ferrodos, and what part number for my 968CS calipers?

David I would go with DS2500. I have had recent new front pads and used these for the first time. Excellent.
One thing is I got 968CS spec pads and if you check the RS246 brake noise thread you will see some interesting comment re pad size on RS2

I was going to get the 968CS spec pad as it is 2mm thicker than the RS2 spec pad, which as I'm running an A8 disc which is only 30mm thick instead of the proper 32mmspec, I thought that was the way to go...

have'nt been over to rs246 for a while.

Basically after a correct fitting of new pads ie corrosion removal and new backplates I still had pad/disc noise on and off. The view was the extra thickness of the porsche spec vs audi spec 968CS/RS2 pad was to blame. So you should be OK.

Just out of interest, I use EBC turbogroove discs & Ferodo pads on our series 2 Coupe, they're not bad.

However, the best brakes I've used were the Tarox 40-groove discs with Tarox pads which I had on a Seat Toledo. Excellent stopping power.

I know the cars aren't S2's but I thought I'd share my thoughts anyway.

When you say backplates, do you mean the pad pusher plate thing with the two lugs that fit inside the pistons? How much do these cost to replace, mine are a bit grotty it has to be said.

yes and not much but there was a delay as they came from porsche and I had not sourced them just the pads prior to taking car in.

DS2500 ferodo pads are brilliant. I use them and get no problems with fade even on track days. I am also using Hi-spec 4 pots along with 314x30mm discs. Worked well on a 400+bhp car

                              Dan,

those backing plates are around £11 each from Audi and you need 4 of them.

You may be better getting the Porsche items or Euro Car Parts also sell them.

I'm currently not using any and only get squealing when reversing down the drive.

                                Hi Mike
Cheers, I actually don't get any brake squeal right now, I was just concerned that they looked a bit shoddy, but they seem to be doing the job. More concerned about the darned EBC Red pads, have ordered the Ferrodo's so we'll see what the difference is... I still wouldn't expect a "Fast road" pad to break apart like that in less than 3 months when I've been doing only normal London road driving since putting them on?

Forgot to ask you Mike - what's your new brake setup? How's the S2 doing?!

                                Cheers
