            17zr/zl

            Hi Andy what you want know as I'm finish testing my 17zr/zl still using hawk pads not the best pads, but ok for road use I guess will be getting some better pads for next year and custom bells and thicker discs as cayennes are 34mm thick not 32mm so that should help cooling of discs and it should save weight up front

              I have ZR18 with 345 mm discs from Mercedes. They fit 17" wheel in my A4. All I had to do is put exta 20 mm spacer.

              You can also use ZR17 with 345mmx32mm disc. My friend has that in his 17 and fits no problem. Very good setup. Tested on the track with DS2500 (FCP1626H)+ VW Phaeton brake ducts.

              The disk is form MERCEDES-BENZ M-CLASS (W163) ML 55 AMG (163.174) 02/98 - 06/05 avalible form ATE and others.

                17Z and 18Z are petty much the same size, the mounting offset is the main difference other than the piston sizes
                17z has larger pistons = more powerful caliper. 17z is the better option IMHO.

                  Did you measure the pistons? I read that ZR18 has bigger ones.

                      17z = 330x32
                      18z = 350 & 368x34

                      From what I can see.

                      17z or 996.350.429/430 with 330 merc discs sounds good...

                          This is largely true.

                          17z = 330x32
                          18z = 350 & 368x34
                          Unless using standard mounting points (IE no adapter brackets), there is nothing really linking the 17z/18z to a specific rotor diameter or range. You can position them where you want and run 17z on any rotor size the 18z can run. You can also run 18z pads in the 17z calipers for the increased pad area. They are about 7mm taller.
                          The 18z inside face to face (and guide pin clearance) are about 2mm wider to use 34mm rotor, but this can be worked around as well by grinding the pins on the 17z.

                          17z - 34/36/38
                          18z - 30/34/38

                          Did you measure the pistons? I read that ZR18 has bigger ones.
                          Yes, I've measured. Those are correct. 17z has about 10% more piston area (3060mm2 vs 2750mm2).

                          I've played around with these alot, both virtually and with real parts.

                          Here you can see the hole pattern interference with 18z calipers spaced for using 350mm rotors. The equivalent 17z bracket does not have nearly as much hole pattern overlap. The boss or pad to mount the caliper does not need to be cut into as much.

                          Not 100% apples to apples, but here is the 17z bracket for use on the OEM 345mm D2 S8 rotor (which is a heavy ***** 26lb. boat anchor, btw...for comparison, the 2 piece 350mm rotors in the 1st pic are a scant 18 lb.)

                          I agree that the best caliper to use on B3/B4 cars is probably the 17z because the mounting points are positioned radially further from the wheel axis (if comparing where the 18z mounts would be with the caliper positioned in the same spot) and allow for the adapter bracket to be of a more sound design. The 18z's, depending on where they are positioned, can create a hole pattern interference issue. Plus the 17z have more piston area and are much cheaper to buy...

                          Also, to stay on topic with the OP, with the smaller diameter rotors, the 17z/18z will fit on some 17" wheel designs. But certainly not all configurations.

                            i wanted to upgrade my front brakes from 312x25 to 345x30 or 32.
                            just bought some mercedes four piston calipers (40/44) and i hope they'll fit under the 8x17 oz alleggerita.
