I sourced the discs (323) a while back and have just got round to ordering other parts for the upgrade.
A set of 5 16" avus wheels were on the bay at a very resonable price and i couldnt resist £80.
I want to keep the wagon stealthy
If you do what you have planned you will have to get the discs machined every time you change them.
Also if the discs have a strange groove like a machining gouge in the edge at one point, this is where they were balanced. When you turn them down they are no longer balanced unless you have the kit to balance them again.
If you are sticking with 16" wheels its easier to go with 314mm discs.

May have to save the 323 discs for another day then
Here's the plan , machine the discs to 320mm to stop fouling on the caliper. Am i bonkers or could this actually work?
Err, yes, I think you are bonkers particularly if you plan to keep the car for some time and may need to machine new discs again. Why bother? Why not just use off the shelf 314mm discs, which you can race and warp to your hearts content and simply replace.
OK, technically, the 320mm is slightly larger and will therefore disperse the heat a little better. It should also be able to apply a slightly greater breaking force as you can mount the pads slighlt further from the centre of rotation. On the minus side, the is a slightly greater rotational mass.
However, I don't think any of the above points are really going to be noticed. Basiclly you will use the same pistons and the same pads and therefore produce basically the same braking effect.....so just why no just use off the shelf parts and be done?

I think im just clutching at straws, as i have had the 323 discs for a while and dont want to waste them, off the shelf parts make alot of sense though.
Any pointers on machining the cupra brackets for the 314 discs ?
In in this boat as the previous owners upgrade used machined down disks.
now i'm running 18" i want to run 323 or 340 discks but i'm going to need custom brackets as the caliper have been machined as well!
Dont fancy spacers so on the look out for some decent priced custom brackets, damn that MartinJS where is he when you need him (off sunning himself no doubt at the moment!)
You can easily have some "custom" brackets for a 323mm disc.
Easier than having them with non machined calipers , how much was removed from your caliper's base?

2.5mm or 4.5mm, slybadger site is down with the write up so i cant confirm.

Right - had another look at the offending caliper again yesterday and it is no worse.
However - with a big torch and by getting down and dirty - I've found that the clearance in that particular area is almost nil.
To be on the safe side, the next time I drive it is going to be the toolmakers I used to work for, where I'll take the disks down by 7mm (diameter) and bring the calipers in by 4.5mm (by taking material off the caliper mounting surfaces)
This should hopefully give >4.5mm clearance.
AP, Wilwood and Outlaw all recommend 3mm as a minimum.
