Why is that then? Why would i need them machined down with the rs2 carriers but not with the seat carriers? Well looks as though im going to go for the seat carriers where do i get them from? Are they the cupra r ones? thanks again

        Hi there,

I am no expert on this, but I am a few weeks ahead of you on this. I have chosen the standard discs and modded Seat carriers route, as I have warped the discs on my 2.8 coupe on a track day, so don't want to get into machining discs. Machining the carriers just once struck me as the better route (for me).

I have looked at both fitments on other forum members cars and decided that with the RS2 carriers, the discs are just too tight to the inside of the wheels if left at 314mm. Also, using stock discs allows the choice of using cross-drilled, grooved discs etc.

On this thread I posted the costs of collecting the bits so far.

        Cheers n

I personally like a small amount of clearance between the caliper and the wheel. It looks like (damn those big @ss brakes barley fit)

I use a custom A4 bracket and have about 1mm between my 18"(spokes)

You can use the RS2 ones straight out the bag and have no problems. Tried and trusted method, prior to the discovery of machining down seat calipers.

Pays your money and takes your choice, on a personal choice i have the RS2 carriers but other memebers have recently had success with the seat carriers.
People are free to use either option based on the 'it's your toy' principle. I was trying to point out that SEAT brackets are cheaper than RS2 ones and when used with 16" Avus wheels are in my opinion the better option because you can get the machining just right so that you maximise the caliper to wheel clearance without reducing the diameter of the discs. With RS2 mounts, 314mm discs and 16" Avus's you will have somewhere around 1.5-2mm clearance which several people on this list will tell you is not enough.

Alistair C, I think it was, tried the RS2/314mm/16" option but had scoring on his calipers due to the minimal clearance and had to machine down his discs and calipers to make some space. He couldn't machine the RS2 mounts because they do not have enough meat on them to machine.

When I started planning to fit my brake upgrade earlier this year I searched the archive and read everything I could about Porsche upgrades. Several people had talked of the SEAT bracket and how it might fit but nobody wanted to commit to saying whether it actually did or not. I decided to grasp the bull by the horns and find out once and for all whether they would work. With the help of Graham (Tekkno300) and Mark (Rotoryboy), who both live locally, we managed to assess whether the SEAT brackets could be made to fit and went ahead with it. Other people have used this info to do their own conversions and have got them on the road before me but the principle has been proved.

With you having 18" wheels clearance is obviously not the issue that it is for us that are sticking with small wheels. I could point out that SEAT brackets and 323 mm discs are a good pairing under big wheels but I think I'm starting to sound like a SEAT salesperson now.

At the end of the day it's up to you which brackets you use and whether you have your discs machined. At least with this forum you have a chance of having the facts in front of you before you make the decision. Which ever way you do it I have to join everybody else who has done a brake upgrade and say to those who haven't 'Just Do It!' My car is totally transformed by this mod and I am now much more confident driving at speed on 'my private runway'. Insurance has only gone up by 28p a month as well so no worries there either

Yep - whats the beef here ?

Its been discussed many times before - the RS2 carrier fits absolutely fine under the 16" Avus rim. Its less well known that the older style 5-spoke S2 wheel is not compatible with some upgrade options, but the Avus is fine for the RS2 route.

The RS2 caliper carriers accomodate two options of brake disc on the RS2 - one at 304x32 and another at 322x32. Of course neither of these RS2 brake discs don't fit the S2 cos several other dimensions are incompatible.

With slight modifications to the 996 calipers you can accomodate 314x30 or 323x30 discs from the A8 by some fortunate co-incidence of mechnanical objects having suitable dimensions.

Regardless of what A8 disc you fit under the RS2 caliper carrier, the 996 caliper has the same clearance to the roadwheel.

Some folk have found that to get the 323/30 disc to fit properly that the pad locating pins need to be bent by hand for sufficient clearance.

I'm taking the view that the RS2 carrier was designed with 322mm in mind and that by machining 1mm off the disc diameter a nice solution will be found without bending pins. Such a machine job is cheap and easy.

Seemingly the use of the Seat Cupra carrier - when modified - allows for greater clearance to the roadwheel than the RS2 item - when using the same 996 calipers. Does the modded Seat carrier provide greater clearance to the disc/rotor as well.

However - it is my understanding that the Seat carrier can only accomodate the 314/30mm disc and not the 323/30mm item.

It's partly moot to me as I already bought the RS2 carriers as at the time there was only talk about modifying the Seat carriers and I wasn't up for the risk on that.

I haven't bought the discs yet - I'm 90% sure that I'll go for the 323mm route and have the local machine shop wallop 1mm off the diameter. Then again, I might bottle it and go with the 314mm disc in the knowledge that I'll have better clearance to the carrier.

therein lies the problem - misinformation.

The RS2 carrier with 996 calipers does NOT fit inside a 16inch Avus without modification to
                              calipers, discs or carriers.

Fitting without mods will result in the caliper rubbing on the inside of the wheel when hot due to expansion.

Right then - where's all the RS2/996 upgraded folk for the final word on this... I've been round this subject many times on previous threads and was absolutely sure this had been checked before.

Based on 1st hand accounts of what I read here - I chose the RS2/996 option so that I could run inside the 16" Avus (winter wheels actually)... and now Mike tells me there are heat related clearance problems. Confused and not a little bit hacked off !

Anybody care to share photos of clearance - hot and cold - plus any idea of measurements - especially when hot ?
