Had the belt tightened today but still no change. I think the next step is to do the voltage regualtor and a new belt. But im struggling to find a voltage regulator as i cant find it on vag or gsf. If someone has seen it can they post a link or if someone has one laying they want to sell can they let me no. I am tempted to phone the stealers but i have heard what they are like with regards to the s2

Well u guys were correct if i left it i would end up needing a tow home. Well firt sign it was on its way was the alarm made a little chirp then battery light on the computer then the abs and then the kangarooing, then eventually i came to a stand still. I have been looking at the alternator to find the part number but there are a few numbers. Can someone give me a pointer as to what the part number will contain? im going to get the a new belt and so the voltage reg then see if that does the trick. cheers

You could get a belt / regulator, but that'd be at least £30 - and you may still need a new alternator....... Thats exactly what I did last week - just a shame I wasted my money on those bits first.....

If your alt is the same as mine (a 90A unit on a 3B)

The numbers on the sticker were:
        ___________________
        120 469 822 888
        N1>14v 34/90A
        Made in Germany 020
        034 903 016D
        ___________________

The last set of digits are the Audi part number.
This has 'apparently been superseeded with 034 903 017X
Audi Quoted me £183.95 plus a £50surcharge, Plus VAT.

The Bosch part number is 0120 469 822H (for OEM)
The Bosch part number is 0120 469 888E (for aftermarket)
Mine came from CamberleyAutoFactors for £96 plus VAT

Of course, if yours isn't the 90A version, then none of the above is relevant to you !

thanks for your help but mine is not the same as yours. Mine consists of:

          0120468121
          N1>14v 40/ 110a
Didnt u consider reconditioning the alternator?

Apparently that P/n of yours is indeed the 110A for the ABY. - As far as I can tell, Audi will now only be able to offer you 034 903 016N which is the 120A version fitted to later (from 8B-R-000178) ABYs.

You could try the Bosch number at your nearest Bosch dealer 0120 468 121

I did consider reconditioning - but for 2 problems:
            1) Urgency - only car - needed to get moving
            2) I don't know anyone locally who I'd trust to do a job well - this genuine Bosch part is at least guaranteed to have been done using the right parts and equipment.

Any good Bosch agent will have the skills and parts to reco such an alternator. They can also test very quickly for a duff regulator or heavily worn brushes. Has been a long time since I got an alternator reco'd but the local Bosch guy charged about 50 quid from memory and it was as good as new.

Just another quick question. If i test the alternator to see if it is working would a dodgy voltage regulator affect this? Really i want to find out if its the voltage reg or the actual alternator. Also i phoned a parts place who has contacts with many s2 owners and he said that he has never heard of a s2 alternator going what do u lot think?

the brushes can wear out on any alternator ,he is talking rubbish . does he think the s2 alternators cant wear out ?my brother had his go on him and he had an s2 .just get the thing tested its a free test and they will tell you if its the regulator or the brushes.

he didnt say they cant go but he said its rare on the s2 and something he had never come across. So if i get the alternator checked out will they be able to pin point the problem?

of course thats their job . s2 alternators are like all the others brushes wear out just the same .you must have wasted £50 worth of energy asking the same questions .sorry not being funny . like i said the test is free it takes less than a minute for them to find out whats wrong with it.they will tell you exactly whats wrong with it before they repair it. what if you get the regulator and then find it was the brushes then you have to pay again .if you cant find anyone local bring it to brum i'll get it sorted for you . sorry if i sound rough .

although - to simplify matters, the brushes are actually part of the regulator unit!
