    Options for 3b ignition

    Hey all,

I know that the 3b ignition will not be safe when you go over 500 hp. What kind of options do you have?. I know that some people changed to a ABY igntion. I believe this also included the ECU, engine cable etc. Which will costs a lot of money but also a lot of work to put it all in.
Other people buy after market ECU's, which are even more expensive and require a lot of work and expertice to put it all together.
I also read somewhere that Mihnea was busy with finding a solutions to keep the 3b ecu and only change to 5 coilpacks. Is still still in development

What will be the best thing to do?

    thanx again,

    Erik

I ran into spark trouble in last weeks dyno session, and this was about the hp range you mentioned, even with 0,4mm or 0,3mm sparkplug cap only little over 1bar boost. After that problems.

I think I correct this bying MSD 6A ingnition box 150$ in many net stores.

    /edit: typo

      thx Anle!

Can you tell me more about this box? (maybe a link) What does it do and is it easy to connect?

The stock 3B ignition is fine IMHO, maybe the coil is a little bit weak but it didn't prevent Audiman's 3B from putting out 455 HP on the dyno.... now of course if you ask me, I like mapping ABY/AAN/ADU ECUs better because of the more advanced knock control on them....

I know Audimans car is fine, but what Ïf you want more I was thinking of 550-600 hp.

Yes, for those numbers it is just fine, but exhaust gas meter shows clearly that unburned fuel is coming trough and soon after that you can hear it your self, this was little more power than Audimans but not significally larger.

MSD = Multiple Spark Discharge, the name the company uses is related to the product they make. Ignition boxes that create multiple spark discharges for each ignition cycle.

But will this not cause a problem when Mihnea wants to tune it?

One thing is sure, the 3B is very sensitive to static timing, ie the position of the distributor marks in relation to the TDC mark on the flywheel. This has to be absolutely spot on. It will change slightly as the cambelt wears and so needs to be checked.

So true , I'm guesing my cambelt is already playing with me(and it's only 700km). Need to buy geniue items :E. I think the guy who provide me parts sold me a fake.

As for MSD , Mihnea can you answer the question , is it worth instaling on 3B's ? As i'm thinking ignition is weak on mine also

Erik, I don't think an MSD coil would make any difference to the tuning, it can't affect the ECU in any way, so it can't affect me either

I hope an MSD coil is worth using on a 3B, I'd say yes in principle. However, it still won't make the ECU be smarter and have smoother knock control as the later ABY/ADU systems.... the problem is that on an ADU, knock control can work, whereas on a 3B I have to ensure it's always inactive (meaning no knock gets detected whatsoever, not that I do disable knock control because I can't anyway) so the car runs smooth. 3Bs where knock control kicks in every once in a while don't run smooth, whereas on an ADU where a couple of degrees get knocked off on one or 2 cylinders every once in a while you won't notice anything because knock control is much smoother...

What is the "kit" of parts required to convert the ignition? ECU, coils, timing devices?
