      @Dan,
      Did you fix your headlamp aim or are people still flashing you ?

      What's the beam pattern like with HIDs in conventional reflector type lamps rather than the later projector style lamps ? I'm thinking of getting an HID kit for my Passat but won't bother if the beam is scattered everywhere. Could this be why Dan was being flashed ?

        Pete, I feel the discharge unit is not correctly aligned and is making the beam pattern too high. It could be too far in/out or misaligned in another plane.

          Hi Pete
          Yes for me it was an alignment issue pure and simple: I've re-aimed the beams (and gone a bit on the cautious side - ie. a bit lower than you need as I'm aware i don't have projector lenses or the automatic re-levelling systems that modern HID installations have a standard) and no one flashes me anymore. The increase in light intensity is huge vs. the old standard bulbs, I'm glad I did it.

            I wasn't very clear with my response Dan. The discharge uniyts can be adjusted a bit inside the headlight ( I think?) The headlight may well need adjusting as well.

                      Why?

                      Front fog lights make little difference in heavy fog (the only time they are legally allowed to be used) and make you look like a 1.2 Clio driving teenager if you use them at any other time.

                      Surely with HID's you will have enough light to see where you are going, even at S2
                      warp speeds on a country lane, so there is no arguement about needing more light.

                      Only rear fogs are of any use in the fog, so you can see the idiot in front who stopped where he/she shouldn't because it's foggy But no one hear want to upgrade those....strange that

                          I have to say that even with my H4 HIDs and lights on full beam, I would still happily have more illumination - a few weeks ago I was hooning around the back lanes of East Kent, through all those narrow (single-track), high hedged, tree-lined roads and at night in those conditions I resorted to switching on the front foggies as well to give a bit more light throw on to the hedgerows themselves - handy for spotting random things that run out at you in the middle of the night and all those blind junctions they have down there...

                          Front fogs are also meant to serve the same purpose as rear fogs do - ie. in restricted visability they're there so that other people might stand a chance of seeing you. I know they're mounted lower so that they stand a chance of illuminating the road a bit better too, but you're right they don't really do all that much in fog. Brighter ones would help I'm sure
