i forgot to update this. my problem has gone away by replacing the headlight/indicator stalk switch. i must of had a fault switch where a contact was either breaking down or had shorted to another contact. all ok now thoughPearl white 91-S2-3B K&N cone air filter - Home made induction pipe work - 18" RS4 replica alloys - Yokohama Parada Spec 2 rubber - Colour coded body work - Bilstein/H&R suspension - s/s 3in turbo back Longlife exhaust - SFS water hoses - Samco boost hoses - RS2 FARB - RS2 eyeballs - Squeaky interior trim

The twin white plug might be the feed to the indicator repeater.. I've had a car, audi 100, fitted with the dim-dip thing, cant remember where it was but seem to think the resistor was pretty large. Not sure the S2 was ever fitted with this though.
As far as driving with side lights only, these are for parking, if its time to put the lights on you should use dips.
Sounds like changing the stalk is your best bet.Comment

I've found the dim dip wiring diag in the 88-90 coupe handbook. Haynes page 12.43.
There's a relay J89 and a resistor N74 the relay runs from S18 (I think, writing very small) its 25A removal should ditch the dim dip feed.
The relay should be in the lower relay plate in position 18, the resistor thing may be nearby.. wire from relay to resistor is gn/ge (green/yellow?)
Its possible the problem can be solved with a later switch stick and you are replacing with the same type?

Yeah true the stalk I tried was off the b3 20v that I had so that would be the same I think.
Take it the lower relay plate is underneath the steering column.
I'm going out in a sec as I saw when I got the headlight motors working what i thought was some sort of resistor behind the aux radiator and was going to have a look at that.Comment

The relay may well be pink in colour, yes under the steering wheel..Comment

Right i've had a look under there was not 100% where the relay is but happened to wonder why I had a green/white wire plugged into one of the relay plugs? This was a bit worrying it looks like its aftermarket so I un-plugged it to see if everything worked after.
The car started up fine
good start, I check the side lights and this is where it goes a bit pete tong, the drivers one on the first click of the stalk would not light, the passenger one lit up strobing but after about 5 seconds came on and worked fine, so I checked the fuses etc for the drivers light to see if i'd knocked anything when I checked the lights again they strobed on first notch and worked fine on second, but when I started up the car on the first notch the drivers light went out once but I tried it again and they both strobed, I did not want to leave this on so switched it onto the 2nd notch and they worked fine.
With reference to the wire I found, under the steering wheel on the relay board there are 3x plugs at the bottom, on the right hand one looks like my afterrun brown relay
finally seen one, the one to the left was empty and the next one had what looked like two connections, the wire was plugged into the top one.

No pink relay then... did you check fuse 18 or 16, in the fuse box??Comment

LOL you're not reading my posts
Sorry wasn't that clear, S18 is a fuse..Comment

If its not the dim dip ******** then there must be a short, maybe have a look at the wiring plug to the stalk, sometimes they can get a bit carbonised.Comment
