ok will do, did anyone work out what the brown/white wire that was in the point 8 on the plug was for, the one that is spliced in with the yellow wire thats now in point 8.
Gonna go out to check those fuses quickly.
Just been out to check those two fuses, no change with either of them removed. Could not see anything else relevent so to speak on the fusebox cover or the relay part of the cover as well.
Peter, any further news on the lights? Been doing a bit of thinking.
I still think there might be a dim-dip circuit on the car, I did a search on google and quite a lot of info comes up, just need to find some better info on where the resistor is located on the coupes..
Another way for the dip circuit to maybe get some voltage when its switched off is via a bad ground. I suggest trying a ground wire from the ground side of the sidelight bulb (the original headlight ground) to a suitable chassis ground point, preferably the same one the HIDs are grounded to..
Peter, I've only skimmed the updates to this thread, so apologies if I have missed something. Have you tried swapping the ballasts and bulbs around to see if the fault moves with the change? If it does, that would suggest a defective ballast is at play.
After your suggestion of "give it some hammer" I did and yee haa it sparked into life!
How did you work this method? "Oh ****** it don't work, take that ya barrstard!"
Cheers!

I thought sidelights were for parking only (while parked on the road, possibly if the limit is more than 30mph?) and therefore you'd never have the ignition on with just the sides on.
I don't think it's law here (although it is in nearly all of Europe) but I do think it's in the highway code somewhere that sidelights are not for use while driving - it's headlights or off.
Could save you a lot of time trying to trace what appears to be a feature of the car..

Wrong,
Sidelights can be driven on at anytime of night as long as you are in a 30 mph limit.
Might seem mad but thats the law.

I tried the fuses but no change, so I have not had much chance to give it a go and check stuff I did however get the lights aimed which was good and you can see the spectrum at the top of the beam even when driving along I also have not once had the bulb warning come up on the dash.
One thing I do want to change is to upgrade the earth point on the drivers side as its working but I would prefer to change this. I've got to look behind the aux radiator and plastic trim by the drivers headlight as I saw a plug with green/white wire there so maybe this is something to do with the resistor newsh was saying about. I could not get a good look at it yesterday unfortunately.
Anyone got any idea what the brown/white wire behind the stalk is for as a few people don't have that.

I'm glad it worked.
And yes. It's the Taurean way of sorting some things out.
Also an old friend of mine used to say "If in doubt, give it a clout."
Seems like you have a wiring issue there Pete, First setting of the light stalk should be sidelights "only", next click dipped beam (sidelight still on too), next click highbeam (if you have done the wiring mod correct, dipped stays on and again, sidelight "on")
I'm thinking the wiring mod you have done isn't correct mate.
Jas..
Just had ellipsoids and HID's fitted to day, HID's in the dip lights and they work fine, but when I put the main beams on the dips go out, any idea's what's gone wrong?

You need to do the infamous wiring mod at the switch.
A search will bring it up
2001 Avus Silver B5 RS4.
2004 A4 Avant 1.8T quattro Sport-LE.
1995 S2 Coupe - sold (sniff)
OR, as I found out when I fitted the ellipsoids to the TDi (IIRC, Stu "4wheeldrifter" had the same issue his 3B),
I already had a wire in position 8, hmmm? The wire already in position 8 was a br/gr wire. Looking at my wiring diagrams this is for the headlamp levelling motors.
I switched the br/gr wire from position 8 to position 1, then moved the yellow from position 7 to position 8.
Everything functions as it should, including the parking light (leave an indicator on, remove ignition key and the sidelight should be illuminated on that side only.)
Also found there's no need to try and remove that whole black around the connector, you need to prise the black outer sleeve away from the little triangle shaped stoppers and it slide up one notch, allowing you to simply pull the wires out, switch them round. Snap it back when done. There's even a little arrow on it to show you the direction you need to move it.
(Good old vag manuals for that tip)
