    URS6 No Sparky No Starty

Probably asked a load of times, but I'm stressed and lazy in equal measure, I'll keep looking after I've posted this.

Today my 96 S6 started dropping power completely, then bursting back into life, then dropping, then going so I thought I'd switch it off and on again as a first port of call, only it didn't switch back on again...

I thought fuel pump relay but swapped for a known working one to no avail, fuel pump gets power when cranking (though doesn't seem to prime? Not sure it's meant to?) and makes pumpy noises when cranking and carries on a little after you stop cranking.

So moved to engine bay to find no spark at the plugs. Unplugged/replugged everything in the immediate coil area still no joy but that's where I concluded my investigation because I was getting hangry.

The only thing I've changed between perfect working condition and this is fill the tank with super unleaded.

Any ideas where to start with it tomorrow?

edit - turns over healthy as a horse, plugs were dry so no fuel either I guess...

Related then - can the G40 sensor be changed without disturbing the cambelt?

That's the guide I've since found, absolutely spot on, well done that author! And thanks for the link with the extras

Everything I've read sounds like my cam position sensor is the problem (could have guessed really, hall senders are always my bloody problem with VWs too!) which lead me to the question, can I change the G40 sensor with the cam pulley in situ?

Thanks go to Dave and Paul

The sensor is behind the wheel but you can zip tie the belt to the cam wheel and move it out the way.
There’s a how-to here somewhere, possibly cross referenced in Dave’s thread.
Edit: the link seems to be broken..

I would check timing first. Make sure flywheel and cam markings are lining up correctly. It’s not unusual for the crank pulley to slip, especially if it was re-used at the last cambelt change and or the correct holding tool wasn’t used.

                  It seems a joke...
To much years ago I passed for the same situation.

The solution was tooooo simply, in my case:

One of my new OE coil (one week) was wrong and broke the FUSE.

Install an old coil, change the MotorFuse and turn On

                  Hahahahahahaaaa

Ps. Maybe itsi your problem too.

                    But...
i'm thinking about... And I remember, I think... my sparks was wet.

If yours are dry, left the hose and turn on. The gasoline must drop.

Ps. If the error will be a sensor, always must run the gas pump, true?

                        Haha

From what I've read the pump will still run but no injectors and no spark without the essential sensors, and with it cutting out and spluttering the way it did it sounds like it isn't the bottom 2 sensors as without those it would have just shut off straight away.

I'll get back to it in a couple of hours and check all the fuses first as that's the easiest thing to do! Cheers!

So if I understand you correctly, you're a Basque separatist currently spending some quality time in a prison cell? Is that correct?

After a bit more digging, testing, multimetering and swearing, I have established that the problem is a missing G4 pin on the flywheel and the telltale marks where it used to be, it appears to have whacked the sensor on the way out too
