Grey smoke coming out of lower crank outlet in idle

Well,

Just mounted a trial setup for the PCV system, and went for a spin. I then look under the hood while the car was in idle and saw grey/white smoke coming out of the lower crank outlet on the side of the block, the one with OD 30mm. Ofcourse the smoke was coming out of the hose that is connected to the lower crank outlet.

As far as i know, this means the my compression is ****ed and properly that 1 or more of the pistons/pistonsrings is broken, correct?

No that doesn't mean your engine is fooked. that is blowby and I seen a lot 'worse' than this. True it would be nice if there were none but there is and that is one of the main reasons for fitting the catch tank....to stop the engine reingesting that gas and oil mixture and keeping the intake charge and IC matrix cleaner.

If you watch one of our cars fitted with a catch tank being caned on a rolling road you will see a lot worse than that coming out of the tanks breather. If you go for a fast drive you will also see that the engine pukes a fair bit of oil out of the crankcase too. Hence the need to regularly empty a catch tank or more importantly plumb a drain line back to the sump.

Don't hate your car yet.........at least not for that anyway

P.S. launch the coke bottle and get your tank in there as soon as possible.

Do a compression check if you are worried, how many miles/km has your engine done?

Hmm oki Mark,

But i mean when the car is idling and in neutral. Then i thought it was supposed not to blow grey/white fumes? i thought the grey/white fumes was compression slipping by the pistonsrings? And perhaps bad compression would be the cause of my car over fueling?

I know that when you drive it will blow out fumes

Futher more do you know what the compression should be on the cylinders? Will get it checked to gether with the fuel pressure.

Yeah will tthrow away the cola bottle in a couple of days for a catch tank this was just a quick fix, and i aint driving the car that much.

The car has done 170.000 km, think it was somewhat renovated at 100.000 when hohenester did the tuning. At least i rs2 conrod bearings and other bits.

It does not use oil.

Jonas it is blowby, there will always be some even at idle.

I can't remember what the compression should be off the top of my head.

Maybe a forum search will tell you.

If it does not use oil, I doubt the rings are fooked.

Mark is right - it looks like blow-by alright. Its horrible to think our engines breath all that crap, but then its also easy to see why there are environmental issues about dumping that direct to atmosphere.

A cyclone/separator tank with a sump return for the oil is the best solution here.

Do another movie at idle showing the 'air' output of the cyclone tank... Its kind of hard to film under boost though - except on some rollers maybe !

Yeah but paul, this was under idle just into the cola bottle but will fit the catch tank in a couple of days and will then film the outlet. But at idle the lower crank blows out some sort of gas, as you can se on the video

Oki so i got my compression meassured today. It was 11 one cylinder and the rest was 12. So i guess nothing to be worried about.

However, i did notice that the outlet on my catch tank is the same diameter as the two inlets. Is this a problem? or should i get made bigger, i think it is 11-12 ID.
