Hey guys, in the following months I'll be developping a dizzy removal kit for the 3B, or at least a kit that will allow removing the HT part from the dizzy and to use it to drive 5 separate coils, all this by retaining the stock ECU and wiring harness. Basically it should be a bolt-on part that will go on the dizzy and 5 coils that will drive each spark plug.
Interested?

im struggling to find space in my engine bay at the mo'
have a catch tank to fit too
flamin' battery in way  what a stupid idea to leave it there in early 3b's
could do with being moved to boot.

The idea is that there is a limit to HP on a 3B engine, given a turbo/compression ratio/rods/crank RPM combination, at some point (and somewhere around 400 HP I think) the 3B ignition system can't charge a single coil too quick enough in order to provide a strong enough spark at the cylinders. With 5 coils you have eliminated this problem!

Martin, nah no way it takes so much space, the coils will be a lot smaller and we might even be able to supply with part numbers for coils that would fit on top of the 3B valve cover but I think it's too early now to be able to guarantee this kind of thing...
An idea for you, get a battery holder out of a LHD S2 and fit it under the rear seat, much less hassle and much more room to fit a catch tank and possibly a 5 coil pack.
Cheers,
Mihnea

is there much work involved to fit,

that's what I meant but if you don't want to do it, it should be fine too in the trunk...

Sounds as a very interesting mod.
I'm seconds away off doing the msd ignition swap on my wheels.
What are the costs approx.? And do you have some more pics off the system. Did you actually build it to a 3b engine?
Cheers
Hi Jeffer,
no idea as to costs so far, the project is due to start in late January and I have no clue how long it will take to develop... shouldn't take very long but we'll see and I'll keep you guys posted about this!!!
Cheers,
Mihnea

Grant from Dubweiser did a similar mod to his S2 engined Golf MK1. You guys might know his car. He converted his igniton system to use 1.8T coilpacks. He had to reshape one to fit around the oil filler cap. It was simple mod with a Dremel on the coilpack to do this though. Now, ignoring the problems that Audi had with a few batches of coilpacks which caused lots of problems for a while on these engines, are these of further benefit? I guess the donor parts must be cheaper? Would this be of benefit to an ABY engined car? Is there more energy available from these modern coilpacks? Been curious about this for a while, since GTi this year actually when I was talking to him about his 550bhp+ engined car. He was running something like Motec for the engine management system though.

Mihnea, we will be having a little chat about this on Sunday!! Misfires occur at about 1.9-2.0 bar boost. Trust me! BTDT. Seemed to be ok at that boost on cars with smaller turbos than mine tho. That 26/27 pushes a lot of air mind.
