    S2 Coupe Weight

Hope this is in the right forum as there isn't really a category this fits in.

Anyways was just thinking about power to weight ratios of the s2's compared with some of the other 4x4 boys. Does anyone know what the weight of a standard 2.2L s2 coupe is? Can't find it anywhere on the net, I would assume about the 1300kg mark. Can anyone be more precise?

    Cheers guys

My 3B has 1420 kg on its original reg. paperwork from germany, when i got it to Denmark i had to get it weighed in order to determine taxes ( we pay tax yearly based on the weight of the car) and i took more than 90kg (seats, spare tire and so forth) out of the car in order to push the weight down, and she still weighed in at 1400

        Bit heavy i think

the s2 is quite a heafty lump, without shedding most of the interior and glass etc..it would be difficult to lose too much weight, the actual shell itself must way a fair old bit

When my 2.8 got a dink in the wing, the local Audi paint shop said that the steel used on these cars is a thicker gauge than other makes and that it is 'hardened' in some way....although I dunno what that meant.

There have been several threads on weight saving, with the largest 2 seeming to be a carbon bonnet and the removal of the aircon (WHAT! you must be mad...aircon and heated seats are second only to 4wd and turbos in the list of greatest inventions for cars). Do we have a list of the various weight savings available?

Another question might be, what is the effect on acceleration for every Kg removed? That would tell us whether it is worth removing the small things (such as the fog lights, which must weigh at least a kilo for the pair)

            Cheers n

Carbon bonnet is a tasty weight saving, I think lightweight seats look like a handy step forward too. Shame the Recaros are £1,100 each for their lightest option - but Corbeau do a really light seat for about £250-£300, much better value! Better lateral support and a big weight saving.

What about CFRP front wings as well? I mean stock profile, not the wide versions.

Nah - particularly in the UK, we can live without heated seats - and aircon doesn't feel very necessary right now either!!! We just don't get enough hot days in the year.

Don't forget that weight savings improve performance ...and take a lot of strain off the engine, clutch, gearbox, brakes and suspension.

Even more useful, reducing the weight of rotating parts (eg wheels), will make a big reduction in the inertia effects encountered - the tendency for objects to want to continue in their present state (ie, standing still, or moving in a particular direction) - so acceleration, braking and handling will all benefit.

                All weight savings are worthy!

Of course, removal of aircon and the aux radiator takes weight off the extreme front of the car too, at point of the biggest problem area.

Then there is the 100kg that you save with a 3B coupe to start with, even more if it's compared to a wagon...!!

It's a heavy bonnet as standard - IIRC you can save 25-30kg by going to CFRP.

There are some implications to switching to carbon, non-standard fastenings might have to be used depending on the strengthening and whatever inserts the bonnet has, and ideally a phenolic resin type layup would be preferred to make the piece more resilient to heat.

Personally I would sacrifice a little weight and apply paint to the bonnet too, avoid the Max Bling look!

My S2 Coupe (ABY) is equipped with Aircon. With 2-up a few weeks ago at the MOT place it weighed in it 1700kg. Taking off 2x80kg body weight it's still a mighty 1540kg - that was a full tank of juice and washer bottles too !

Heated seats weigh very little, i have a complete kit to install into mine. AC weights a ton though!

I'm building my CQ20v with an ABY with 3B flywheel and crank pully, No AC, airbags, or procon-ten crap, should be a little lighter than your stock ABY

A US spec CQ20v weights 1440, dump the AC, elecy seats, and safety bumpers it must be a little under 1400. What i plan to do is weight all the S2 bits prior to the conversion as i really want to know how much extra weight is in the turbo, IC, oil cooler etc..

How hard is it to remove airbags, I dnt want a broken nose

Also Is it quite dangerous removing the AC unit urself or is it alright as long as your careful of chemicals and stuff?
