May I suggest learning the colours through a tuneful limmerick or aide memoire such as (in the style of Dr. Nick from the Simpsons):

The green one's connected to the... speedo,
the grey one's connected to the... rev clock,
the pink one's connected to the... fuel gauge... etc.

          Hi!
I think it looks worse than it is!
There seems to be a lot of connectors as the whole engine bay loom is teed into the motronic loom at those cylinderical connectors. Basically they connect a lot of the other engine bay accesories, things like washer pump, brake warning level, hydraulic fluid, MFS etc, inputs for the gauges, turbo after run etc.
So if you were transplanting this into a car without any of those you could effectively weed them out. The loom for the motronic itself is really self contained. You would only need the wires going to/from the ECU and sensors plus the Bat, ign and earth.
With any luck it might just be a like for like swap. Perhaps Audi used the same colour connectors and pin position. Patience is a virtue I've been told!
You haven't mentioned it but I assuming that you need to use an ABY ecu as well?
If you get stuck, I have what looks like a 3B loom. Quite happy to spend some time with the DMM and identify what goes where!

Good luck Tom, looks like one hell of a job - good to know you're giving yourself a refresher taking the 3B to bits... coz mine's next

Its not THAT bad... I have a spare ABY loom here I can refer to, as well as all the ABY schematics so it's just a matter of taking time to double check all pinouts and colours on each connector. Then labelling everything before assembly.

OMG!!! I took the dashboard and heater box etc out of the car today!!!
What a job. I need some BTDT help of where i need to plug the harness in. I started pulling wires out of the back of the fusebox, but i have extra wires on the 3B loom that are not in the ABY loom, such as a connector that seems to go to the oil/volt/press gauges?? WTF?

Also in the 3B loom there is a big fat power lead that plugs into the back of the under bonnet fusebox. The ABY loom doesnt have this? Why not!

Anyone who has done this fancy coming down to my workshop over easter?? I would make it worthwhile

                        Tom,

It's a bit late I guess but one way forward would be to patiently buzz each wire going to and from the ecu plug. One identified you only need to hook those wire back up to the vehicle. You can then seperate those wires from the loom. The motronic loom itself is realively self contained its all the other vehicle wires that are causing the prob. Basically the motronic loom only needs power (ign/bat) and earth! The only other wires that need hooking up are the signal out wires.
It seems the biggest problem you have is trying to transplant the loom in its entirity. Try to look at it as just transplanting the motronic components!

Mmm. Sounds great in theory but I think in practice it may not be so simple ??! What do you mean "buzz" each wire going form the ECU plug exactly?? Test for voltage? or continuity or ??
and how does this identify them except to say you would have a reading of some sort?

Audiman.....if you didnt live 300 miles away mate I would come over and give you a hand....

Word of warning...I've never done a 3B to ABY swap, but I'm willing to help experiment on your car

There is a power lead on the 3b loom because the battery is in the engine bay whereas on the aby loom the red wire goes to the back seat area.
