How to achieve fast spool up of turbo

Gentlemen, looking for your knowledge or opinion here. What I find is that there is a whole bunch of engine modifications to be done, some which will make engine more reliable, and some who might increase engine HP. What I'm looking for is what modifications to do or not to do if the target is to get the turbo to spool up at a lower rpm. I hate the thought of giving up too much low or middle rpm torque.

To a certain extent if the engine is optimal for low engine spool up, it should be possible to use a larger turbo, with an even larger potential for high HP. My list of things to do on a 2,2 turbo engine is:

    For better spool up:

Change exhaust cam (7A or ADU)
    Tubular exhaust manifold
Free flowing intake (get rid of airbox, cold air intake)
    Free flowing exhaust
    3 angle valve job
    Better tuning

    What might work:

Port engine head, although I fear that low rpm torque might be hurt
    Other intake cam
    Retime echaust or intake cam

Then there is the best solution: Dielsel block and crank.

I guess there is also a "not to do" list here:

    Wild cams
    Short runner intake
    Lower compression
    Restrictive intake or exhaust

This is my list, all done in a hurry. I would like to hear if anybody has personal experiences, especially on items such as porting, valve jobs, intake, exhaust manifold, mapping and cams. What to do or what NOT to do.

I've heard opposite about short runner in take on Turbo car.
Should help a lot response and spool up

I guess if you want a lot of exhaust to spool a turbo, it would make sence to look at the engine from a NA engine's view, where long runners equals low end torque. Short runners is for high rpm action usually.

Catepillar, I know Jonus uses NOS and race gas to get fast spool up and more HP, is that what you are refering to?

For a day to day car NOS is out of the question for me at least, more interresting in "normal" tuning.

There has to be somebody here who changed from original to ported head on an engine without changing lots of other parts at the same time, what are your impressions?

I think Catepilar is refering to Jonus because he (and Tor Øyvind Skinne) has built and tuned a lot of 5 cyl Audi engines the last years. Not only for himself but everything from 300-1065HP.
Together they have a lot of knowledge about these engines.

Everything that makes more low down power is good. More power = more exhaust = better spool up. A properly ported head is allways a good thing, and longer intake runners should help. Free flowing exhaust, both manifold and downpipe, is also good for quick spoolup. 2.5l is not a bad thing either

is a reverse intake like Mtm a short runner intake

                Gooday you Mudcrabs

What we have here is an engine research and development program.
I dont wish to upset anyones week end hobbies with their heads under the bonnet, But realistically the question I have to ask is whats wrong with 169kW AND 350 NM out of a 1994 to 1996 Audi coupe S2 with a 6 speed manual gear box.
I started restoring Vintage Vehicles as far back as 1964 and still have not finished this part time job on a 1927 Amilcar G type tourer.
The last engine research program I worked on was an oil cooled engine with the fly wheel running of the camshaft, 2.5 million dollars later it became a engine display piece.
So my surgestion is to leave the Audi S2 alone and stop trying to screw it.
Its called the KISS theory, KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID.
I have been trying to get the correct answers for shock absorbers and springs for the past two years from KONI and BILSTEINS direct and they all run away, and currently I cannot get an answer from AUDI on wheel bolts ?.

LUCZNIK: Firstly : Any company that make wheel spacers for audi can help you with your longer wheel bolts problem.

Secondly: You must be a real looser if you can't complete something spending half of decade.Am i wrong ?

fast spoolup and highrpm engine: use the dieselblock bore it yo 83,00.use the SHORTER stroke,90,8 or 86,4 ,and even really long rods(158-165mm) the better stroke and rod faktor... better than 1,75.and big inntake runners.....then bb turbo.....

So why is most of the people say that those reverse inlet make the engine more responsive and give less turbo lag?

                              trying to think logical
I would say on a TURBO CAR

shorter intake= less volume to pump for the turboto reach target pressure= more air earlier in the cylinder= more exhaust earlier= faster turbo spining with less volume to pump to reach target pressure= more air in the cylinder= more exhaust= etc ...
For me it look like earlier spool up or what?

My 2 cent's thinking. might be wrong. This is only for turbo car.
