    Lee,

Do I understand that correctly... the twin cam (4 valve per chamber) Lancia engine had *diagonally* opposing inlet and exhaust valves ?

Now only the Italians could have thought of that - that is amazing. The complexity must have had some benefits for them to go those lengths and expense... Wow !

Inlet was above the engine and there were two exhaust amnifolds for the inline engine. I'll try to dig out a cutaway photo as I have one in a book somewhere on my bookshelf in work! What the hell are all my engine books doing in work!!
Lee, the car that you're talking about was planned to be the Group S car from Lancia, Group S being the replacement for Group B before it was banned at the end of 1986.
I have a book with this car in it and it's feckin mental oh to build a car like that

There was another special by someone during the Group B rally days which fed the intake charge between the cams and had 2 exhaust manifolds...I will look it up! It was MENTAL!

Paul APG just mentioned the one I mean....Group S!! Didn't even remember that bit [the name]. Must have read about it over 10 years ago! Pictures tomorrow if I can find them!

@Paul N, I am not kidding aout the diagonally oppose valves....they were nutters looking for any advantage....mid 80's mind, imagine what they could do today with astronomical budgets and more modern materials such as MMCs, Beryllium, Ti, carbon etc (don't forget the computing software/power available today for CAD, CFD etc too)!

Dangerous in '85, what about 20 years on!?!?!

You beat me to it mate! Twin K26 on a 1.8 litre! What boost pressure were they running I wonder? Crazy developments! All carbon too! I guess this was shortly after McLaren pioneered CFRP in F1! That was the early '80s right?

I am sure that road cars would be a bit different today if that competitive nature and innovation was nurtured and given a marketing excuse for funding! Oh well!

I can have a habit of doing this (if it was my fault this time)! I am an administrator on RS246 so this probalby explains why I don't post very often these days...conflict of interest and all that (I'm meant to keep things sensible and monitor posts..which I do, but I have to bite my lip too often to prevent digression!)!

Good fun anyway but a pain in the **** to find topics later on in this forum! BTDT! LOL! I've been drinking anyway if an excuse is needed!
