    Ski's engine problem

    hi fellas...

my natural instinc tell me this is due to a camb belt change (or one of the parts changed in the process) but my brain tell me other wise as i tested the s2 under strong pressure for about 1.5 hours after the cam belt change :S

    changed :
    cam belt
    water pump
    all belts
    radiator
    thermostat
    etc...

tested it under strong pressure, drove it, battered it.. worked sweet and perfect..

4 hours later, out of the blue half hour into driving, the engine starts to rock, rock so bad it shook my car, the revs didnt wanna pik up, lost power, small smell of cats from exhaust while idle, and jsut generally ticked over like a robin reliant! so i pulled over scared it was the cam belt, checked everything (visible to eye on roadside) and all seemed fine, started it up again to find same problem.

i had no choise but to drive it back, on way back, 5 mins into driving with htis problem, it just dissapeared during driving.. like it never happened.

this happened the following day again, but turning engine off for 4 hours got rid of the problem.

so as yo can see, there is no pattern to it, it just comes and goes.

Could it be i need my MAF cleaning? anyideas? The cam belt was done by a s2 expert (not me, i dunno what im doing hee hee)

i checked hoses that are on display and connectors.. all seems fine

this problem is either off.. or on... mostly seems to come on 20 minutes into a drive totally standard s2.. any ideas anyone?

it just judders to 4k (really hudders), then pulls slowly to rest of rev range..

car has cooled for 40 mins now and still does it

    any idea's ?

it jumps like a kangaroo upto 4k then pulls with less power (although i too scared to red line it in this current status so i dunno how it acts above 5k)

i also smell some petrol, it misfires a lot... and sounds like its on 4 cycinders

ive been searching this forum all day, and i found a post on page 8 of this section made by Derek who had similar problem.

Someone (i fogot name now) had a very similar problem to me after a cam belt change and his problem was down to a loose O ring which wasnt tightened properly? could this cause the results im geting?

feel all alone here.. anyone out there got ANY clues? Would u link my problem to a cam belt change? does it sound like a electrical problem?

To me it sounds like a hall sensor problem.

If it jumps like a kangoroo 90 % of the times is some sort of air leak.

Try to accelerate very gentle all the way to 6k rpm and see if you get any problems. I tell you this because this used to happen a lot in my car. Once it happened in the middle of a long trip. They way I found to get home was to accelearte very, very gentle and engine responded very well without peaks. I even managed 110 mph Though if I tried to step on it the kangoroo jumps did appear.
In the end it was and air leak that dealer took 4 months to find out,
mainly because some days the car did run perfect, others I noticed an important decrease in power around 3,5K and others it behaved like a kangoroo. (I still don't understand this)
You could also change the dump valve as this is an inexpensive part that gave up on mine and caused me some power delivery problems.

              Hope you solve it soon.

it jumps like a kangaroo because the engine is juddering to much even my gear stick is shaking (this is also when engine is idle).

the lower the revs, the more power i give, the more it judders. although it judders while idle.

i mean.. ive driven this car for two years.. ive had some gremlins in my time but nothing like this... and for it to happen on the same day as a cam belt change? any links there?

the belt was changed by a s2 pro with the right tools and i watched it happens while nagging him making sure it all done right so cant see it being anything belt related.

could it be the cam ?cog? (or whatever its called) sensor ?

Sounds definately like an air leak, check for a burst/split hose, or even one that has blown right off or is missing a jubilee clip. If you have the stock airbox (no cone filter induction noise) you might even be able to hear the whoosh of the escaping air too.

Check that the intercooler connection is ok and that you infact have the o-ring on the exit to the crossmember, unclip the plastic inserts in the front airdam to gain access to the intercooler and check that the jubilee clips are tight - when mine slack off my car runs *****. Check you have the small guage hose connected still to the dump valve and that all connections there are tight.

Air leaks are a pain in the *** to find but i am pretty sure that once you find it your car will run fine again

                  HTH,

would an air leak make my engine judder like hell when its idle at under 1k revs?

also, would an air leak make the car engine sound like its running on 2 cycenders (like a tractor) ?

finally im geting close to finding the problem, many thanx guy u dont know how much stress this problem has caused me!

I did not have any engine rattle at idle, but my leak was not very big.

Whoever I have seen in the flesh an RS4 with one Intercooler hose that was completely out that couldn't idle, engine just stalled but before that it shaked as it was going to explode. When hose was seen and replugged engine was like new.

                      Hope this helps.

yes it helps a lot.. many thanx..

are fault codes given for air leaks? (will air leak come up on a diag?)

now this problem stays on all the time and does not go away

it sounds like i just need to strip it apart and check every peice? (all sensors and pipes? anything else?)

ive just driven it 3 miles... i had to no other choice.. dosnt seem to get worse.. but its very bad as it is.. seems like engine wants to jump out of my hood.. the gear box shakes like it wants to leave me too do i smell?

Ski, check to see if you are getting plenty of gasses coming out of your exhaust, If not you could have a collapsed cat or silencer. I have seen silencers collapse and cats that have blocked silencers causing too much pressure in exhaust and therefore making it run like a dog!

I dont have the equipment to check the emmisions, but the exhaust sounds in good shape and i get a small smell of cats coming from the rear with this problem.

So far... for this problem ive been recommended to check...

for air leaks on the intercooler
                            lamber sensor
                            MAF sensor
                            CATS
                            O ring
spark plug (or coils or leads)

soon as it stops raining i will go outside and check these items out to the best of my knoledge.

                            any other recommendations?

i checked for fault codes, nothing came up, which is strange as i would of thought at least my washer sensor would of been picked up as its faulty.

It sounds dodgy and i dont know weather to trust the vag-com test.. still sounds like it's running on 1 less cylinder.
