0,4 boost, first run with the car

Check the cam timing to make sure it's on the marks. Then loosen the distributor clamp (13mm nut) and rotate the distributor body to align the marks. The 13mm nut is tricky to get to, ISTR a short spanner is useful, maybe with a length of cord attached to pull it with..Comment

The cam marks isnt aligned either? I rolled the car so the 0 mark on flywheel is only show half of the 0, as In the picture i posted a few days ago. Am i not In TDC here? Whats the next step now?
this car is giving me sleep issues soon

Bought a set of orginal cams and swapped out the 7a cams. Timing on the distributor was off after swap so it didnt start right away. Adjusted and now it runs with boost. If it was the cams or the timing that has caused my boosting issues is unknown. Now it runs like it should!Audi S2 Coupe

You can have a situation where timing is close enough to start but not close enough to give you boost.
Glad you've sorted it!
FWIW i reverted to stick cams too, I was getting good boost but the car never felt right with the 7A cams and I seems to be getting more surge, 3B cams work good and give great midrange which is what I wanted for a road car.Comment

Sorry to be dim but in the can/rotor arm picture what are the marks? ie I can see a very faint line on the dist body but a great square mark on the can - is that the alignment. ie is it really that critical? In reading other posts I am also starting to wonder if the replacement dist cap is correct as it is 180deg out to the original. See the pic - the metal strip is on the opp side of the housing - you can see the raised portion is on the opp side but the fitting lugs / recess makes it the only way to fit the cap. Having the metal strip on the opp side would this make a difference? I think I need to refit the original cap (despite the damage) and see what happens as I have not touched/turned or moved anything on the distributorAttached FilesComment

The lugs on the bottom of the dizzy determine orientation. The markings have nothing to do with it. It should only fit in one position. Obviously an incorrect cap might not work as the contacts inside may be the wrong height for the rotor arm to make contact. HT leads must also be correctly connected in accordance with firing order of the rotor arm which is easily checked. Is your car still a non starter?Nothelle S2 Avant

Yes these are the static timing marks and must be aligned perfectly when the Cyl1 TDC zero mark is aligned in the bell housing window. Turn the engine forwards onto to the zero mark to take account for any backlash then adjust the dizzy. Then turn the engine backwards and come forwards slowly to double check.
The camshaft marks should also be aligned perfectly at this point, if not your belt is out or the crank pulley has broken its key and slipped!
Do not rely on the marks on the front pulley/ cambelt cover, they can’t be trusted.Comment

The metal strip is just a ground connection for the black cover which is an RFI screen, doesn't matter which side it is as it's grounded by the tip.

Looks like the new cap might be a pattern part? Or is it Bosch?Comment

Thanks to you all for the clarifications - really appreciated. I will try and go back into it all - the real pig is that with the Inlet Manifold back on, access and viewing is an absolute nightmare - only with the IM off you can see stuff. And yes Tractor Dave, 6 months on and it's still a non-starter. I have never been so depressed with anything mechanical as much as this in my life...
The dist cap is indeed a pattern part - I think the Bosch one was about 4x the price.
I am amazed on those timing marks - thanks for clarifying its a line on the can not a square blob tooComment
