Get the top nut off before lifting the engine - if it's knackered, the weight of the engine MAY stop it turning the mount's spindle. I once had two Scotsmen stand on an engine to put extra weight on the mount so I could get the top nut free. A power wire brush on the exposed threads before starting is a good idea. Both Draper and FACOM at least do an offset adapter that lets you get a standard semi-deep socket onto the nut.

Once that's done, support the engine and whip the lower nuts down 5mm or so, then jack the engine up until the mount rattles - then it's safe to remove it. If it's collapsed, you may need to jack the engine more to get the new one in.

I don't have ETKA handy, but there's a bug in the ur-quattro ETKA that might also be in the S2 - the mandatory 6mm spacer for the right mount is listed for the left side of the car with a comment of '(Right)'.

You see, this is what I love about this forum, so many people that have experience to share. That all makes perfect sense Phil, I will try and take some pics when I tackle so that we can make this thread in a guide.

      Thanks,

Well I took the plunge last night and battled for a couple of hours and finally got all 6 nuts and bolts undone and off. I will post up some pictures later and add a small write up. Short story is, I took the metal intake pipe off above the cam cover to try and see what I was doing. It did not really allow me to see any more of the drivers side mount but I could get my skinny arm and elbow down between the throttle body and brake master cylinder to locate a deep 17mm socket and ratchet on the mounting nut. This can be maniplutated from underneath too. The passenger side is a little easier, but I ended up using every socket extension I had both 3/8" and 1/2" to create a 2ft long extension that could be threaded through the fan housing to crack the forward most nut of the passenger side mount. The main mounting nut and rearmost nut were relatively easy. All I have to do now is crack off one of the oil cooler hard lines to allow me to drop the drivers side mount off and replace. Pass side one is on finger tight. Another hour or two should see these changed....

Pics will follow with a few more details...

        Cheers,

        Steve

                I'd like some too!

I dont want standard mounts and i'd rather not put solid mounts in. Anyone know anywhere else to get the part from 034?

                Cheers

                  Couple of weeks??

Been discussing this with Brian Tonks, whether to put a poly top hat on the delrin, or make a poly/delrin sandwich??

Brian has the first set of poly/delrin gearbox mounts to test, nxt set going to Will for testing
